I. Only by exposing oneself to the fragility of life can one see that something indestructible sustains it. II. Life hangs, like a horizon line, between the celestial sphere and the dust cloaking everything. The line that divides earth from sky is neither earth nor sky. III. We wander in search of salvation, of something that will save this moment, this gaze, this gesture, from nothingness. Without realizing that all of this, all this harrowing beauty, is not asking to be saved: it needs only to exist. IV. Everything, in its fragility, manifests the indestructible. ... Angel Albarrán (b. 1969 in Barcelona) and Anna Cabrera (b. 1969 in Seville), an extraordinarily talented duo of Spanish photographers, will be having their first exhibition in Italy. Albarrán Cabrera have been active on the international photography scene for some time now, and their work has taken on an increasingly pictorial quality over the years. Blending elements of the Japanese photographic tradition with the light, colors, and moods of great Spanish painting, they achieve a perfect balance between the two, in prints of stunning quality and complexity. Gold leaf is applied under the paper to give these photos a deep, mysterious glow, an enigmatic spectrum of light that reverberates through the image. Whether in color or in black-and-white, their photography gives viewers the sense that they are glimpsing the genesis of something primordial, the very birth of an image. It is an image that hints at a deeper reality, at something “indestructible”—as the curator Federico Ferrari describes it, quoting Kafka—and shows the world in a different light, motionless yet shimmering. The quest of each ephemeral shot is to grasp this indestructible source, to bear witness to it at the very point where it seems about to vanish. Made up of about twenty works, this exhibition allows visitors to retrace the varied yet consistent path that Albarrán Cabrera have traveled in recent years, while also including some photographs never shown to date. The exhibition is accompanied by a curator’s essay that shares the same title, L’indistruttibile.
We are honoured to announce that we'll be represented in Italy by Galleria de'foscherari in Bologna. We'll have our first solo show there!. ... V. The indestructible, though present everywhere and in each moment, becomes tangible only in a vision, an illumination. Only when the life form, shaking off everything that distracts it, becomes capable of deep attention; only when the long wait for a guiding image, something beyond any subjective, illusory imagining, materializes into a real figure, does life become destiny and does each thing take on unexpected meaning in the chiaroscuro sculpted by the light of an absent sun. VI. The indestructible is neither inside nor outside of us: it is the boundary between us and the world, the skin of meaning granting us the certitude that we exist, that we are here—and that this here was waiting just for us. VII. Each life form is always just a threshold waiting to be consumed by someone’s hand and gaze. To live on the threshold, consuming the form allotted to us, is to grasp the meaning of life. Stopping short of that or imagining one can go further implies giving life some additional meaning that does not pertain to it. . ... Excerpt from "The Indestructible" by Federico Ferrari. . “Earth is ancient now, but all knowledge is stored up in her. She keeps a record of everything that has happened since time began. Of time before time, she says little, and in a language that no one has yet understood. Through time, her secret codes have gradually been broken. Her mud and lava is a message from the past. Of time to come, she says much, but who listens?” ― Jeanette Winterson, Weight: The Myth of Atlas and Heracles
