[ STEADY ] : sender steadies receiver by placing their hands on their waist when the receiver almost falls against them.
It was genuine clumsiness, no matter what anyone else said or thought. Sage had been good--so good--about making sure she wasn't slipping back into old habits, but there was nothing she could do to prevent herself from slipping on uneven concrete. The sidewalk was, in her defense, not exactly flat. There were cracks in it where tree roots were coming up or where weather had done its damage.
Her embarrassment didn't seem to care, though. It didn't matter that anyone could've slipped, only that she was the one who did. That anyone might think it was because she'd had too much, or was falling apart or--
Her train of thought was cut short by the fact that she didn't land, hard, on her bottom. She didn't land at all. Sage had felt her leg go out form under her, and then... Then Adrian was there, warm hands around her waist, keeping her upright. There was a metaphor there, or something. "Whoa, hey, careful," he whispered.
"Thanks." She straightened herself out with his help. His hands stayed on her waist. Ever since that time they'd kissed, she'd been a little too sensitive to where his hands were, she thought. "I, uh, sorry."
The confusion on Adrian's face would keep her going for days when she felt like she wasn't doing things right. "For what?"
She considered answering--telling him how much she felt like a fuck-up--but instead, she just shook her head. "Nothing, no, never mind." She pushed a loose strand of her hair back. His hands still didn't move, so she didn't feel like she should start to walk again. Not even if they were falling behind the rest of their group. "Thanks for, uh--yeah, just thanks."
" don't do that. don't act like you don't give a damn. " (sage/adrian)
Had Sage always been a good friend? No. Had Sage always been good at showing her love in a healthy way? No. But she was trying. Really, genuinely trying. Adrian knew that, or at least Sage thought he'd known that. Apparently, he didn't know, or her efforts weren't good enough.
"I--" She paused. Just arguing back--telling him that she cared--wasn't going to work. She knew that. First of all, he was hurt, and second of all, just saying I care wasn't as effective as proving it. The fact that she'd been trying notwithstanding, she couldn't just say I do care and expect him to say okay.
"You what?" he snapped back.
Sage pressed her lips together. Tears welled in her eyes, and she balled her hand into a fist to try to keep them in. If she cried, he'd start worrying, and that would bring a whole other mess. "I know things have gotten weird between us but you're still my best friend and--" There was something in Adrian's face when she said that, something that didn't sit right with Sage. He didn't look right.
"Right, sure."
That was a bridge too far, even for Sage. She reached out, grabbing his hand, holding so he couldn't just jerk away. "Adrian, look at me." Reluctant as it seemed, he did turn up to look. "No matter what's going on, you will always be my best friend. None of this would ever change that."
Adrian let out an audible huff. "Yeah, I know." He turned away, and Sage couldn't help but lean forward to try and catch his eye again.
"I really love you, no matter what, okay? I promise you that." She stared at him until his gaze softened, and she was finally able to relax a little.

[ play ] – for the sender’s muse to run their hand up the receiver’s shoulder and play with the hair at the base of their neck as a means of comfort.
It had been one of those exhausting days where Sage wondered if she should just stop leaving her apartment. Not literally--she needed to remember that it was okay to exaggerate, but not to take those thoughts too seriously--but she did want to curl up.
It was probably for the best that Adrian was there when she got home, tucked into the couch with one of those tomes he seemed to always have. He didn't react right away, too absorbed in his book. Sage didn't mind, though. She wasn't exactly ready to talk. Instead, she slumped down on the couch with her phone, before remembering she'd deleted all the fun apps and staring blankly at the screen.
She wasn't sure how long she spent staring like that before she felt a gentle brush against her neck. She turned her head, but Adrian's eyes were still fixed on his book. One hand held the book, obviously, but the other was swirling its way through the hair at the nape of her neck, drawing gentle spiraling figure-eights. She closed her eyes and sighed, some of the tension dissipating from her shoulders.
She wasn't sure whether he moved or tugged on her, or if she just gave up being upright, but when she landed, it was with her head on his shoulder. His hand followed her, still making those gentle movements against her skin.
Sage promised herself that she'd let him hold her for a few minutes only before starting her day. And then, when a few minutes passed, she promised herself only a few more. And a few more. And by the time she did flick her eyes back open, the book on Adrian's lap was nearly finished. What kind of monster would she be if she disturbed his peace now?
Addy sat perched atop the hotel bed, looking down at the two boys laying on the floor below her. One of them was passed out, most likely from the pain of having both of his femurs shattered. He was accessory, something that Adelaide had picked up for her to eat when he woke up. The other was her brother, sleeping for the third day in a row. Well, not sleeping. Adelaide remembered the feeling. It felt like she was dying slowly, then being ripped up from the seventh circle of hell and forced back in to her own body. Adrian wouldn't be happy when he woke up, but it was necessary. At least, that was what Adelaide had thought before she bit him. Now she was just wondering if he was simply dying and would not come back.
The other one was coming back to consciousness. Adelaide could feel his heartbeat picking up to a waking state and her mouth began to salivate. She gently stepped down from the bed and crossed the room, then sat on his hips and waited for him to wake up. He was meant for Adrian, but she was so hungry.
"Yeah...it definitely did sound easier...in the book..." Faye replied, heaving a sigh. Although Faye hadn't seen him for a while after meeting him in Vegas, when they did, they became partners in crime once again. It didn't take long for the brunette to find the Chamberlain family's book of shadows. As soon as she found it, she immediately found Adrian so they could see if there were little tricks they could do. Or even some spells.
They were trying a gold-creating spell that Faye had found in her book of shadows. She needed a rope and enchant a spell that would turn it into pure gold. But something had obviously gone wrong because the item on the table in front of her wasn't gold. It was some kind of metal, but not gold. "It's okay...We can try again next time." The brunette responded, still trying to figure out what it was she had done wrong.
