This is a depth camera looking at a bouquet of flowers, from my birthday on the dining-room table in my home. The camera compares images from the two build in cameras using a relatively simple but oft used formula, where depth = focal length * baseline / disparity in pixels. The result is a somewhat recognizable but underwater looking image, that carries significantly less information than human sight. This image is representative of how many of the multitude of computer systems we are surrounded by sense and reconstruct their surroundings: As if they were swimming in the deep sea, carrying only a weak light, with no hearing, smell, touch or other bodily senses to help them. A primitive set of eyes without a body, carrying a compass and not much more to help them understand the world around them. Systems build to mime how human vision works, the cameras resulting images remain thoroughly alien and claustrophobic.
