I’ve been working as a guide again this summer, running multi-day kayaking trips on Jackson Lake into the Teton backcountry. When my group returned from a hike last week, we were waylaid onshore for an hour or so by a mama moose and her calves hanging around our kayaks and support boat (pictured).

I didn't grow up playing in rivers--last year was the first time I even rowed a raft. So beginning to understand what free-flowing rivers are like--their force and behavior--has been a revelation. On the Main Salmon a few weeks ago I took my first Class 3 swim, and paddled my first Class 3 in a ducky. It wasn't huge, or particularly dangerous. It was basically just an introduction to what it feels like to be in bigger water. And it's a feeling, and learning experience, I won't soon forget. And I really hope that the beauty and might of wild rivers is something that always remains alive in the collective human consciousness.
