Orientation week was a blur of interest meetings and student panels that left me inundated with more information sheets than I cared to carry and more emails than I could skim, let alone read. After sorting through the initial deluge of information in my first few days, I was able to narrow down my extracurricular interests to a few organizations through which I could stay involved in activities that were important to me in high school, like music, and also try new things, like writing for a student publication.

Mamá, como te dije el año pasado, ahora es el tiempo donde ya crecieron mis alas y es mi tiempo de volar. Ustedes me enseñaron muchas cosas y me enseñaron cómo volar. Ahora necesito seguir aprendiendo, enfocarme en mis estudios, y enseñarme cómo seguir volando."    Translation: "Mom, like I told you last year, now is the time when my wings have grown and it is my time to fly. You all have taught me so much and you taught me how to fly. Now I need to keep learning, focus on my studies, and learn to keep flying.

12:20ish: I drop off my declaration of a minor form at the registrar’s office! I’m finally declaring my minor in gender, sexuality, and feminist studies, which I earned without even trying. I try to take a commemorative selfie, but there are too many people around. So I head back home and do some work for a bit.

A typical day of mine could include teaching Spanish at the elementary school, running in the afternoon for track, seeing my friend's orchestra concert in the evening, and ending the day reflecting and writing. As I refocus after spring break, I'm thinking about ways I can integrate all of these interests into my honors thesis and other major projects I'm planning for senior year.
