Re-purpose old router to be wifi bridge?
This voip device (obihai 200) can use a wifi usb stick to get onto the network so it doesn't have to be wired to the router. Ok, but their branded stick is more expensive than the device itself, and 5 or 6 times the price of a low-end wifi stick... but the internet tells me it requires the proprietary one :-( umpf. But it suggests I use a bridge instead. ok, dig out the old router, it is a linksys befw11s4. The official linksys site doesn’t have any fireware upgrades for it, but an old archive online does, so I pump up its firmware to the 1.52 which in this thread says “maybe it’ll work as a bridge” with no more details. Poking around the admin and I don’t see anything. This thread says it won’t work, and recommends the DD-WRT, but the chip on this router isn’t supported by that modded firmware :-(
Ah well. The hour research just ate up any savings I might have gotten and essentially doubled the price of just buying the proprietary stick. hmpf.
