I like how in obnl that by telling Jay that he's like, 'human enough' or whatever Sensei Wu actually just made things worse because now Jay is going to internalize that shit and decide that he's only a good person as long as he behaves human even if it's small things that most certainly have no baring on morality.

It's like a newly turned vampire feeling bad for sinking their fangs into an apple, that's an apple bro, you did not do anything at all immoral. but there's this strict black and white dichotomy stuck in your head, this sort of logic that on a verrrrry surface level first glance might make some sense but as soon as you think about from an actually logical standpoint it's gonna fall apart. it's just that people stuck with that black and white thinking aren't gonna have that mindset broke so easily

weird comparison but similar vibes as like, conservative queer people, like trying to go 'I'm one of the good ones!' and trying to conform to standards and norms as to make the people around you more comfortable. just not a very healthy approach things.

need someone to talk some fucking logic into him, I feel like the first master saying the thing with Nya was the closest so far. as someone that had to deal with some internalized transphobia I think a thought that tricked me into treating myself kindly was reminding myself 'i wouldnt think that about literally anyone else' or 'i wouldnt say that about a friend'.

I don’t think that’s a weird comparison at all—Jay in my fanfic has a lot of internalized prejudice he struggles to unpack, just like some people in real life struggle with internalized transphobia, racism, ableism, or misogyny. Overcoming internalized bias has always been a key theme of OBNL since I started writing this story as a high school kid, even if I wasn’t fully aware of or able to articulate the theme as such at the time. All I knew was that writing such a character was incredibly therapeutic for me (And only years later realized why as I started to acknowledge and confront my own internalized biases XD) Now that I’m older and fully aware of it, I definitely lean heavily into that theme!

I was so excited when you mentioned Wu’s behavior was problematic. Like, “YES! This person get it!” One sub theme I knew I wanted to explore when I came back from my hiatus was how even well-intentioned people and beliefs can cause harm. My intent is to write Wu (and the rest of the team) as someone who generally cares about about Jay, but his own negative biases and beliefs prevent him from actually helping Jay in the way he needs to be helped. Jay’s “I’m not like other Serpentine” mindset (which is inspired by girls who fall prey to the toxic “I’m not like other girls” phenomenon✨💅) is a crutch—it’s a short-term fix that forces him to box away part of who he is, and not actually accept himself.

And hoo boy… You’re right. Eventually, that’s all going to come to an ugly head. Unfortunately, not in this story, most likely. But if you wanna see Jay actually confront some of these mindsets (and get a little closer to self-acceptance and make some Serpentine friends along the way) stay tuned for the sequel!

There will be a grumpy Skales, Fang-kwon-do lessons, and a certain Island Snake Weeb who’s a bit *too* interested in this snake ninja galore!

What are the general characteristics of the serpentine in OBNL? Do they have eyelids? Are they exclusively carnivorous? Do they have a plantigrade or digitigrade leg structure? Do they have sensory pits near their eyes? Can they hibernate? Do they experience indeterminate growth? Etc.

A large part of my Serpentine biology hcs comes from 2 underlying principles in my AU: 1) Humans bit by Fangpyre become fully Serpentine themselves, not just green snake creatures like the Fangpyre-bit vehicles and 2) Humans becoming Serpentine is a common enough phenomenon that all living Serpentine by the start of S1 canon have some degree of Turned (former human) blood in their ancestry.

The original Serpentine who came to Ninjago (hoo boy, not going to get into that one right now, that’s a whole other lore deep dive), may have had more exclusively reptilian features, but when they started Turning humans, more human-like features started to creep into the gene pool.

For instance, I hc OG Serpentine as having the lower half of their torsos being pure snake. Two-legged Serpentine didn’t start happening until human Turnings.

(This is how I justify Aspheera and Char having tails despite not being generals- they lived in a time where Turned traits haven’t yet become widespread enough to affect the overall phenotype of the general population.

Conversely, the modern Anacondrai have retained their tails because their blood has remained the most ancestrally pure. Turnings rarely, if ever, result in new Anacondrai.)

Although not true mammals, some of the human traits I assign to Serpentine are

Plantigrade stance

Warm-blooded. While their metabolism runs slower the average human, they are not impacted by cold the way reptiles are. Serpentine are capable of hibernating, but it’s not a deep sleep. It’s more similar to torpor experienced by bears, where body temperature remains relatively high and can wake up and move around when necessary (Hence the Hypnobrai rousing fairly quickly when Lloyd stumbles into their tomb)

Yes eyelids

Yes they can eat other foods besides meat. While Serpentine are primarily carnivorous, their bodies can digest plant matter when needed. They can also taste/crave sweet, a holdover speculated to arise from their post-human biology.

No indeterminate growth. Serpentine undergo a rapid maturity process, hitting puberty at around 12, adulthood at 30, and living until they’re 250-300 years old.

As for sensory organs, I do see the tribes as having different abilities when it comes to that. For instance, Constrictai have an electromagnetic sense that enables them to find their way around underground while Fangpyre can sense heat and are especially sensitive to the rush of blood in a potential target’s arteries and veins.

Le Zoo de Granby remporte un prestigieux prix au congrès de l’AZAC

Le Zoo de Granby s’est vu décerner le Prix Peter Karsten pour la conservation pour son projet de conservation et de mise en valeur aux Boisés-Miner lors de la conférence annuelle des Aquariums et Zoos accrédités du Canada (AZAC) à Cambridge en Ontario, la semaine dernière. Paul Gosselin, directeur général du Zoo de Granby, s’en réjouit :

« C’est une grande fierté pour le Zoo de Granby d’être reconnu par ses pairs. La conservation est au cœur de notre mission et nous sommes heureux que nos efforts aient été soulignés par l’industrie. »

Depuis 2014, le Zoo de Granby agit comme consultant scientifique et collaborateur pour la conservation des Boisés-Miner, une aire forestière protégée de 124 hectares située dans la Ville de Granby, qui en est aussi propriétaire. Ce site est d’une importance première pour la région, autant d’un point de vue écologique qu’historique, en plus d’être un endroit populaire auprès des randonneurs. En collaboration avec différents partenaires, le Zoo de Granby y a développé un projet d’envergure ayant pour objectifs de mieux comprendre la faune et la flore qui s’y retrouvent et de sensibiliser les citoyens à sa préservation.

Un projet en trois phases

2014 à 2016 : faire l'inventaire de la faune et de la flore; compréhension de la valeur écologique des Boisés-Miner. Ce sont plus de 144 espèces de plantes et 124 espèces animales qui ont été inventoriées.

2016 à 2017 : sensibiliser les visiteurs du parc à la richesse de la biodiversité présente dans les boisés, grâce à des outils de sensibilisation comme des panneaux didactiques, une carte des sentiers de randonnée et l’installation de nichoirs à oiseaux et dortoirs à chauves-souris.

2017-2018 : impliquer concrètement les résidents voisins des Boisés-Miner grâce à un projet d’accompagnement personnalisé au cours duquel le zoo leur proposait des actions tangibles pour soutenir la conservation du parc.

L’implication des zoos en nature Avec ce projet, le Zoo de Granby, en collaboration avec ses partenaires, fait une différence concrète dans la conservation de ce milieu naturel. De l’acquisition jusqu’au partage de connaissances, le Zoo de Granby réaffirme sa position de leader et démontre que les zoos ont un rôle à jouer dans la conservation animale, en mettant à profit leur expertise pour assurer la préservation des milieux naturels qui les entourent et avoir un impact réel sur leur communauté.

Gouverner un Organisme à But Non Lucratif (OBNL) : un grand défis

La gestion d’un OBNL peut s’avérer être un grand défis. En effet celui-ci doit à la fois remplir sa mission et disposer de l’argent nécessaire à son fonctionnement courant, tout en pensant aux investissements futurs qu’il devra faire.

Bien choisir le candidat à la direction générale : Le choix du directeur général est pour toute organisation, un moment important où il est difficile de choisir le bon candidat. Dans ce domaine, on choisit souvent à tord le candidat qui semble être le plus motivé. Il est naturel de penser que ceci est le bon choix puisque celui-ci va se dévouer au bon fonctionnement de l’OBNL. Cependant il s’avère que cela n’est pas suffisant. Comme il est dit un peu plus haut, la gestion d’un OBNL est particulièrement compliquée, ainsi il est nécessaire de choisir quelqu’un possédant un minimum de formation et de qualification.

Le financement : un enjeu majeur difficile à relever :Tous les OBNL sont concernés par ce problème. Il est de plus en plus difficile de se financer. Les différentes subventions qui permettent de faire vivre les OBNL disparaissent ou du moins ne font que décroître. Un point déterminant souvent oublié par ces organisations, est la diversification des sources de financement. Dépendre d’une source de financement unique met en péril la pérennité de l’organisation. Explorer et analyser l’environnement de l’organisation, ceci permet de découvrir les multiples sources de financement.

Le choix des administrateurs : une source clé pour le financement : Trop souvent on oublie que le choix des administrateurs est essentiel pour le financement de son OBNL. Choisir des administrateurs influents permet de s’assurer de la pérennité financière de l’organisation. Un bon administrateur pourra vous apporter de manière directe ou indirecte des fonds grâce à son « carnet d’adresse »... Pensez-y !
