The bright city lights flicker across the black shimmering carpet of wharf water as a cacophony of latest-hit music blare through worn speakers. Yet partygoers continue without exertion, dancing the week’s worries away in the pure oblivion produced by the electronic dance music. Meanwhile, tourists and festival-goers line the wharf-side and jostle to take pictures of the spectacular light show, heaping praises on the production of the event. She wants a better a view and is soon hoisted onto the firm shoulders of her father, enabling her to also ‘ooh’ and ‘aah’ along with the crowd at the marvellous light and sound show. As they make their way to the nearest train station to head home, they walk by a homeless vagabond with staggering nonchalance. He in return, exhales heavily and looks forward to having to brave the icy wind of a June night. A cardboard sign and a threadbare hat with coins form part of his surroundings while he waits for someone’s kindness. Tonight is not his night. The hobo resumes his vegetable-like state and sets his eyes upon a couple in the distance. They giggle happily whilst slurping tall coffees and conversing about their day. She relates a funny anecdote from work while he patiently listens and laughs politely. He animatedly talks of his future plans while she shares his enthusiasm and encourages his endeavours. To their left, the drained barista struggles to greet new customers at this hour, the aroma of strong espresso coffee being unable to wake her. She counts down the minutes from the bottom of her computerised screen and deeply sighs, yearning for the comfort of sleep.
