Origins of a Gem
Once again, these pictures come to me from the amazing @painted-rocks.
I know it took me a while to do this @a-certain-rubellite, but I hope you still like it.
When I decided to make a gemsona, I wanted to create a more aggressive, non-standard Crystal Gem. An aggressive, dedicated soldier, since Amethyst didn’t fight in the war and Bismuth didn’t exist at the time. A carefree but defiant personality, her will to achieve victory in all things makes her a very forceful, focused person that is hard to deviate from the goal she sets herself on.
Obsidian was a quick choice for me, a sheet of black glass with an edge sharper than steel a molecule thin. Now I’ll be completely honest, I thought using a normal Obsidian would be a little too bland. But looking through, a Snowflake Obsidian bead (my icon) caught my eye and I knew exactly what I wanted to do with Obsi.
When Obsidian is shaved against its grain, it looks white, which created the key philosophies in her design: Duality and Damage. As Obsidian isn’t a gemstone, but volcanic glass, she had to have an air of fragility to her, why on the physical scale Obsi is barely stronger or taller than a Pearl. Placing it on her wrist makes it, and her life, extremely exposed and vulnerable. To me, any Gem made from glass was prone to damage when extracted or emerge from the ground, and all Snowflakes are off-colors of true Obsidian.
Hence the ‘cracks’ in her skin; made to look like the spiderwebs of broken glass, or stained glass. They represent the path of energy that runs through her body, you see it in a Gem when they are hit with a Destabilizer/Yellow Diamond’s lightning, Obsi’s is blatantly visible and mangled. This is also shown in her gem; the division between the two halves have a mechanical consistency to them. As Obsidians don’t perform tasks that require massive amounts of energy so Obsi was decided to be within the margin of error and so wasn’t shattered for being a off-color. That didn’t mean the Peridots liked her, and she has a resentment towards all Peridots because of it.
The skill of any Obsidian has to do with precision, and Obsi is no different. She is a navigator and co-pilot, using her eyesight to create perfect routes through the stars, chart maps, and advise landing zones for new colonies. There was a time when I thought of giving her a pair of goggles with shutter like irises that constrict when they focus, but making the eyes dilate would get the same effect and get the image of her pupil as a bright star in a sea of black. Perhaps Era Two Obsidians would have the goggles?
The uniform is essentially unchanged from her days from Homeworld, she just added a vest and changed the symbol when she joined the Crystal Gems, the most recent of which are the red diamonds in the star, as a reminder of the Gem she loves.
Weapon design is something I take pleasure in thinking about, and summoned Gem weapons are rather interesting. They tend to have three components: the physical weapon, a projectile attack, and an energy attack. Sometimes they mix or are replaced with other attacks, but these are the rules I adhered to. As a ‘glass’ Gem, Obsi has limited defensive options, and must devote herself to speed, agility, and absolute offence.
The claw is a savage weapon, white where it’s the sharpest, and the distillation of Obsi’s aggression and fury in combat. The daggers take advantage of her sight, and her aim is always true. Because of her instability, any attempt to channel more energy than what will cause her gem to glow will cause an overload and her body will violently explode in a flash of light, the razor sharp shards of her weapon shooting in all directions. The shrapnel passes through her as she blinks out of existence, leaving nowhere to hide.
The ability of Shadowstep was to reinforce Obsi’s role as a Crystal Gem; that of a scout and infiltrator. She honed her shapeshifting skills along with her sight to the point where she could create a perfect shadow of anyone, or attack using her limbs and entire body as tendrils or become an blob of oil or tar. This also extends to her allies, mimicking the combat styles of the best Crystal Gems, becoming Rose’s Shadow. Although she was a jack of all trades, her claim to fame among the Crystal Gems is her speed, second to none, a flash of darkness that cuts all in its path.
I hope this sheds some light on what I think about my character, and of Steven Universe as a whole. Just ask if you have any more questions alright!

It doesn't show up that well, but I found a tube of pastel purple lipstick a fellow theater kid gave to me. I hadn't tried it out before. I feel cute today. ^.^
