Eärendur’s rule of Arnor was uneventful, but due to his father Elendur’s apathy, he struggled to retain the trust of his people in the crown. Hoping a charismatic queen would aid him in his efforts to win back their favor, he married the rhetorician Quildaraumë, sister to one of his closest counselors, and together they attempted to rehabilitate his image. Quildaraumë bore Eärendur three sons: Amlaith, Adanamarth, and Anorhír. But despite their father’s hopes for unity among the realm of Arnor, his sons quarreled so fiercely that upon Eärendur’s death, Adanamarth and Anorhír refused to acknowledge Amlaith’s claim to the throne and split away from him, forming their own kingdoms. Amlaith and was the first king to take his name in Sindarin instead of Quenya, establishing a tradition that would endure until the end of the Third Age. Indeed, Amlaith’s new kingdom of Arthedain is the only one that would not die out entirely even when it fell. Adanamarth’s kingdom of Cardolan and Anorhír’s kingdom of Rhudaur both crumbled away, leaving Amlaith’s line with the only surviving strain of Isildur’s blood.
