conversely i like to think the implant in the agaddon's chest with the eye is something like a tether to max out their ferocity and cleanse their mind of anything but violence

i'd say any further demonification from here will happen due to age or other outside-introduced enhancements

Agaddon hunters ranked multiple notches above hell knights in the demonic hierarchy. To them, hell knights were slightly less disposable minions with much more physical strength than a mere imp.

The idea of, let alone the sight of a hunter treating a hell knight as a partner and equal, would raise eyebrows only among those that are old enough to remember when the hunters weren't functionally extinct.
