The whole band watched as Britney slowly drank from a water bottle. Ruth sat on the rooms desk, a kettle starting to heat up beside her. Penelope was shaken up and leaning against the wall beside the television, which had been turned off to leave the room pin drop silent. Payton stood next to her; hands wet with orange stained water. Crona sat behind her on the bed, tying back her hair gently and helping to dry her off.
The blood had stopped flowing, all four of them had helped apply pads and gauze to her wing’s evacuation points. As she drank down the cold water she felt ripples of pain work through her back, and she hoped that the new dose of pain-killer would be able to do something now that no new injury was to be added. She was wrapped up in a large towel, wet with clearing droplets from her hair and chest, starting to calm down her heat rate and breathing.
The kettle started to sing and Ruth got to making up her tea, while Crona started her line of questions. “Britney, how’s the braid? To tight?” Britney shook her head. “Good. Alright, now I totally get that you must feel like shit right now, to be blunt you looked like shit when you walked out, and you still don’t look so hot. But if you could calm some fears, and just give us what you can, we would all really appreciate it. If this is a tomorrow thing that, that’s cool too.”
Ruth brought over Britneys tea and handed it to her gently. “Don’t burn your mouth. How long did you feel ‘sick’ today? Did you go on stage like this?”
Britney took a small sip from the edge of the mug, and breathed out heavily before she began. “I didn’t feel this bad all day, but yeah, this was starting during the show. I should have known it would happen tonight, and technically I did, but I really didn’t have a way out of it. If I had though of this when we were in the scheduling phase it would have been better but, I mean we are here now, so we have gotta live in it.
“I’m obviously not quite the same as the lot of you. Payton cleaned up the wings in the shower so I assume the rest of you saw them, so I can put it like this. I’m basically a fairy, that’s the world humans use, it’s rooted in our real species name, Farin. Most of us can’t look like I do right now, they live their lives at about ten too fifteen centimeters tall. We all have wings, most of us are bioluminescent, which means we can glow naturally, and most of us have kind of messed up joints. They tend to bend a bit too much, but it doesn’t matter that much.
“The big thing is that we age kind of weird, really weird by your standards. You guys’ age by years, a constant. We age by molts, or how many times we have lost our wings and regrown them. And that lines up with lunar patterns, like full and waxing, along with other stuff that changes per induvial. Tonight was mine, and I have plenty to go, that was my 23rd. I should get about eighty molts before I die, so I’ll be around for a good while yet, but when this shitshow usually happens, Farin medicine can help with things. I couldn’t get any. So now we’re here.”
Britney stopped and drank from her tea as the group took all she said in, and Britney felt a sense of calm come over her as the weight of secrecy lifted slightly from her shoulders.
