I CREATED A SHAPE KEY RIG FOR HIS FACE!!!! It was surprisingly simple and it does create quite a few faces.

I know I'll have to figure out a rig for his mouth directly if i want to get the full potential but this is a relatively simple model so I'm not too concerned... yet. At the least I'd like to add a jaw control to him.

also I've been making this model in secret though I do intend to do a rig showcase when I'm done... this is Irwin by the way

Can I just say I love the way this one came out?

It isn’t perfect by any means (if you look hard enough you’ll notice proportion changes) but the way it’s styled makes me really happy.

I’ll focus on a shorter animation with timing charts next time but I think this was worth the effort!!!
