“Are you hurt?” the demon asks, and Vivian has to admit she is taken aback by the genuine concern on his face. Why is it that she has only ever felt safe amongst these non-humans rather than her own kind since her arrival?

A memory flashes—a dark study, musty night air, excruciating pain as a disappointed golden gaze stares down at her—and Vivian has to consciously push down the nausea that bubbles all the way up to the back of her throat. She brushes that horrid image from her mind just as she wipes the sweat and blood from her brow.

“I’m okay,” Vivian answers her savior, though she does not take the hand he offers. Her arms and legs are shaking but she is determined to stand tall under her own power. “Thank you,” she tells him, avoiding his gaze.

He gives no auditory response and with Vivian staring at the blades of grass at her feet with far more scrutiny than they deserve, she misses the way his lips purse and how his brows furrow. She only looks to him after he has made his way to the felled beast, blood still weeping from its tattered corpse.

Why does he look like he’s carrying the weight of the world on his shoulders? Vivian finds herself thinking as she watches him. The frown he wears as he inspects the creature seems to hint at more than a simple attack by a crazed beast, and the way he is so thoroughly inspecting the area... Questions bubble at the tip of Vivian's tongue—What is that thing? Why did it come after me? Why did you save me?—but what could an outsider like her ever hope to really understand about this strange fantasy world? So Vivian decides to tamp down her curiosity for now.

She will just ask Sophie about this later.
