Wood Burns

Where Orbit talks to his ten year old daughter after assessing (and healing) the sickening burns on her arms.

Eventually, after Orbit's worry receded, he decides to ask Mela why she didn't just go to him if she wanted to learn about magic.

She couldn't look him in the eyes, wanting to say it but the words couldn't leave her mouth, mostly resistant "mmm"s, muttering while her mouth was shut. But Orbit's worried and patient gaze broke through her as she inhaled largely, puffing her chest as she held the air in her lungs, before bursting out, "Because I want to protect you!"

Orbit's brows twitched up marginally, "Mela, you know I'm strong enough to protect-"

"NO!!! You don't- I- I see you!" She's leaning into her elbows as she speaks, voice increasingly getting louder, wobbly, "With the dryads today! Town hall! When there were plants, the- the vines... you got scared..." She inhaled again. Shakier. Oh no, were those tears in her eyes...?

Orbit blinked rapidly, slowly getting up to round the table and kneeling to Mela's level as she attempted to stay strong through the tears now running down her chubby cheeks, "You got scared, you think no one could see it but I swear I could, Papa! Something— someone— it hurt you!"

She sat back down with enough force to make the wooden chair scrape the floor, Orbit put a hand behind to chair to prevent it from falling backwards, "...I know I can't hurt you," she hiccuped, "But I— I don't want you to be scared of me." She was full on bawling, now.

Orbit couldn't help but scoop her in his arms as she clings onto him tightly, walking to the living room, gathering the fluffiest of pillows into a pile on the nearest loveseat, and settling them both down. He kisses her forehead and shushes her as she cries her little heart out, rocking her slowly, subtly.

Once she calms down, at least enough to murmur through sniffles, "Really don' wanna scare you..."

Orbit cups her face, "Oh darling, look at me, hm?" another kiss to her forehead as she shuffles back, "You could never. And it's not your fault-"

"Not yours either..."

"Mhmm," He hums in acknowledgement, "because you never hurt me. They never hurt me either, it was just memories, alright? No one's fault."

harpy form ike who's much much much bigger than orbit. orbit happily squished into a bed of fluffy pillows and on top of him is ike nuzzling into his neck, or ike curled over orbit and his feather ruffles on orb. something of this effect
