OC Introduction - Devon Avery (Moonfall)
29th of March 2022: In the final hours before the moon is due to crash into Earth, Devon Avery assists in the last-ditch effort to save at least some of humanity while fearing for the fate of her planet - and of Brian Harper, her best friend who is currently on a mission to destroy the AI responsible for what's happening, because it's a mission she fears he won't survive, and she's not sure what she'll do if she makes it and he doesn't...
Fourteen years before, Devon moves from England to America after losing all her memories from between the 30th of January 2005 and the 2nd of October 2008 - amnesia that doesn't seem to have been caused by anything, but it's a mystery compounded by the catalogue of scars she has across her body, notably burn scars across her arms and torso. More than that, there's no medical paper trail and the company she's supposedly meant to have worked for goes defunct not long afterward, and Devon struggles in the aftermath as she feels she can't open up to anyone about it, especially when even her own family seem to think she's either lying or was involved in some kind of cult. Dropping out of the maths degree she was halfway through, she sees the move as a chance for a fresh start, and in 2009 befriends one Brian Harper, a NASA astronaut. Life seems to be looking up.
Then on the 12th of January 2011, she sees a news report: Space Shuttle Endeavour has lost all electronic systems and is going to attempt an emergency landing. Devon's terrified her worst fears are going to come true - that Brian will lose his life in a fatal accident. He doesn't, but his miraculous landing is overshadowed when he's promptly scapecoated by NASA after he insists that some kind of alien anomoly was responsible for what happened. Over the next year and a half he withdraws from everyone, his marriage hits the rocks, and when he leaves without a word after his final appeal fails, Devon worries she's lost him for good...
Only she refuses to accept this - instead tracks him down and opens up about her own mystery, and admitting that she believes he saw what he saw. She saves the friendship, but there's still a lot of unanswered questions for the both of them. Nine years later Devon has (mostly) settled down in Los Angeles - she has a good job as a self-defence instructor, lives with her best friend, and is considering finally doing the maths degree she dropped. She's somewhat resigned to never getting her memories back and has (mostly) made peace with this, even though she can't shake off the feeling that whatever she went through, it was far from an average experience.
Then over the next month there's an increase in floods and earthquakes across the world and whispers that something is up with the moon even though no one seems to be able to pinpoint what, exactly, this something could be. Then Devon starts getting mild headaches and flashes of things that never happened, and both she and Brian grow increasingly concerned when the symptoms get worse and yet, much like the amnesia itself, there seems to be no cause for it.
Then comes the day Devon realises these are her memories, slowly returning to her bit by bit, and she starts to wonder, really wonder, just what the hell she got herself into all those years ago, whether their return is connected with what seems to be a global threat - and whether she was somehow part of the same conspiracy that cost Brian his career and his marriage...
