Shaking Hands
Marcel sneezed himself awake for the third time in as many hours. The brig of the Relentless was mercifully dry and the floor lined with hay, but his thick aviator’s coat was still damp and salt-stained and the pale, watery dawn light through the porthole gave no warmth at all. In an act of what he thought was needless humiliation, his ankles had been locked into a wooden stockade within the confines of his little cell, so that he couldn’t even draw his legs up to himself to conserve body heat. The ship rocked in what Marcel thought seemed to be a deepening swell, and he shoved his shaking hands into his armpits, trying to stop shivering and ignore his sea sickness. A bell began to ring on deck, and he heard distant shouting and running feet on the wood floors above him. The floor dipped beneath another wave, and Marcel’s stomach turned. Stiffly he turned to the porthole, and as the ship rocked back he caught a glimpse of a thunderous grey sky. Another shiver rocked him, and he hunched in on himself, mentally steeling for the battering to come.
Marianne (Grey Fox, half-sister of Lunette) has a husband pretty much out of necessity for my headcanon, as it is her line that, two hundred years later, results in Julienne, my Dragonborn. Marcel is still a bit of a vague character but I’ve been working on rounding him out a bit, and here are my ideas thus far:
He comes from Skingrad, and became involved in the cult of Julianos there. (I haven’t decided precisely what role he has at the chapel.) He is at least part Breton, and a mage, so that probably influenced his religious inclinations somewhat.
He is a member of the Mages’ Guild, and something of a scholar; he is considered a serious person, but this isn’t entirely true, he’s just timid and has a surprising sense of humour.
It is possible that Julianne (later Arch-Mage) will have already known him, given her family visited Skingrad on occasion, to pay their homages at the Chapel of Julianos. Perhaps it is she who sets Marianne up with him.
Over the course of her twenties, Marianne begins to get more and more involved in the Imperial Cult in Cyrodiil, and it is this, combined with Julianne’s insistence, that brings her into contact with Marcel.
This is by no means an original idea, I know, but I’m toying with the thought of him being an illegitimate son of Martin Septim, from the latter’s debauched Sanguinist days. What I like about it is that that makes Julienne (Dragonborn) a descendant of the Septim dynasty. There is no way anybody would know about this, including Marcel himself, I just like it being there in the background. It would, of course, mean that Marcel is at least half an Imperial, but I’ll ignore that, he’s my Breton boy now
