Today's (very quick) drawing is of Roah (they/them|25 years old|170cm), one of my first original characters from almost four years ago back when I was in my Hunter x Hunter hyperfixation. They are a Crime Hunter and Manipulator whose specialty is in a sort of vigilante justice, their strong morals stemming from growing up on a self-governed island and frequent trafficking port. They tend to keep others at arm's length, putting on personas to accomplish their missions, to the point where they struggle to name any hobbies or interests if you take the time to ask them (though only their motherly boss, Xiomara, tends to inquire as to Roah's personal affairs).
😷 "How often do you get sick? Do you stay at home when sick or do you end up going outside to, say, get some groceries? If you go outside, would you wear a mask?"
I'm lucky enough to not get sick that often. I guess all the rolling around in the dirt as a kid helped build my immune system. At least the Lyrias Pharmacy is nearby here for the times I do get sick. And as much as I hate being stuck at home, I can't imagine making everyone else sick at my expense. With any luck I can convince Suzu to bring some remedy for me to take on his way home...
🍳 "Are you a good cook? Do you enjoy cooking? What's your favorite thing to cook?"
She laughs. I knew I was destined to be a terrible cook the day my mother tried to get me to boil water for potatoes as a child, and I forgot to add the water before the potatoes. I suspect she's still scraping burnt potato off the bottom of that pot...I'm just grateful that there are enough restaurants and taverns here in Lyrias that I don't even need to think about cooking. I've finally gotten the hang of boiling water for tea, though, if nothing else.
🧼 "Do you prefer to take a shower during the morning or evening? Do you like taking baths? What's your favorite scent of shower gel?"
Bathing in the morning is a pain! It's always far too chilly when I wake up to wait and boil water for a full bath, and I'd rather just do it when I come home and am already covered in sweat and dust from my day at the research lab. It helps me relax before bed, anyhow. And I love the smell of anything floral and woodsy; it reminds me of playing in the fields as a child.
Nara
💽 "Do you collect anything? Why?"
She shows you the top shelf of her dining room, adorned with maybe six or seven assorted plush birds. My sister gave me a stuffed penguin one year for Christmas...I thought it was just so cute, I wanted more to join him. She blushes as she picks up a blue, fluffy one. Haywood got me this one for my birthday a few years back...it was so thoughtful...
🧋 "What's your go-to thing to drink? Do you prefer cold or hot drinks?" Oh, I'm not too finicky about that...but here in Ilomaar it's always nice to have something warm to drink. Tessa usually has a nice selection of tea and hot chocolate in her shop...I should go look later.
Roah
🥂 "How do you celebrate you accomplishments?"
They snort. That would require me to actually have any accomplishments, smart one. But Xiomara was always getting on my case about loosening up a bit and going out to eat with her after a successful Hunting trip. Those taverns she goes to are loud and reek of drunk pissants, but she had my back for years now...so I owed it to her to go once in a while, I guess.
📖 "What kinds of books do you read? Do you have a lot of time to read?"
As if I had time to actually sit down and read a book. Usually those airships had a couple gossip magazines that made the time go by faster during Hunter missions. They pause and their face softens. Berkut does have a nice collection of books I've been meaning to look at. Maybe one of these days I'll get off my ass and pick one up.
Sloan
🥰 "What would make you feel happy and loved?"
He wraps his arms around himself and grins, rocking back and forth. Then he leads you to his family’s kitchen and taps on the leg of the table. His mother, Nastya, has made a tray of biscuits which are now cooling on a rack there. He flaps his claws excitedly, before grunting and pointing insistently at the table top.
❌ "Would you do something that someone told you not to do? Why? Is there someone you'd actually listen to more than everyone else?"
He thinks for a long moment, rocking and humming softly. Then he looks across the room, towards the large open window of the cabin, and points at a tree outside. He flaps his arms, where little wings protrude, over and over, ostensibly symbolizing flying. He takes off running towards his sister Etha, and when he stops, he points repeatedly at her.
bound: Has your OC ever been imprisoned or captured? What happened? How did they get out? Did the experience leave any scars? Roah prides themself in never having been captured by a target or opponent...at least not unwillingly (as a Crime Hunter, they've probably pretended to be kidnapped or trafficked to sabotage a target's operation, for instance). However, as a young teenager, they once made a bad bet with a much older sailor on the pier of the island where they grew up, and were forced into some very horrible things that night that they choose not to speak of any longer because it's far too horrific to remember. Roah promises themself they'll never be so naive as to trust anyone ever again.
future: What's the worst possible future for your OC? Are they taking steps to avoid that outcome? Are they even aware it's a possibility? That they keep living the same life they're living: hunting criminals as a Hunter, working to help others, never taking time for themself or their hobbies...basically just working themself to death. And that that death is one that takes place somewhere where they're alone, with nobody to miss them. Roah is very aware of that possibility and has passively accepted it because they don't know how to do anything differently. It's hard to get out of a bad rut.
Féanne
hate: What does your OC hate? Why? How do they act towards the object of their hatred? She hates anyone who speaks ill of her friends and loved ones. She will put aside all reason and self interest in that moment and confront them, be it with words or her fists. She doesn't know exactly why she is so quick to act in such a way...but it's probably because she wishes she had had people to stand up for her when she was young and being bullied by her elder brother or her parents.
hide: What does your OC hide? Why do they hide it? Féanne hides a lot of her deep sadness and negative emotions (except from perhaps Lata); not even her twin brother gets to see a more somber side of her because she wishes to protect him and not worry him. So, when she missed her twin at college, when she was wishing her family would accept her decision to move to Lyrias, when her older brother demanded she come back home and marry...Féanne tries to shove it all away and pretend everything is fine, as a coping mechanism. She is still getting used to being open about her sadness and worries.
midnight: What keeps your OC up at night? Do they have nightmares? Fears? Anxieties? What do they do in the small hours of the morning when they should be sleeping? She sleeps pretty decently, all things considered. She occasionally has nightmares about being trapped at some noble soiree or event or being forced to marry someone who isn't Lata, realistic ones where she wakes up and momentarily can't tell if she was dreaming or not. Thankfully she's usually able to assuage her fears with some tea and a book before going back to sleep.
Pax
break: What would cause your OC to break down completely? What do they look like when that happens? Has anyone ever seen them at their lowest? Pax has a complex and anything he fails at means he's bound to absolutely lose it, embarrassingly so, regardless of who's around. He's the type of person who can't accept not being good at something right away. It's probably why he became good at Nen so quickly; he forced himself to learn it as quickly as possible until he physically couldn't train any more.
monster: Is your OC monstrous in any way? Is there something that makes them monstrous? Are they aware of their own monstrosity? Do they accept it or reject it? Absolutely, he's monstrous. As much as I believe that demonizing people who do bad things is detrimental to understanding why people do those things...I also believe some people are plain evil and unable (and unwanting) to change. Pax cares about nobody but himself and his own desires, and lacks the restraint or will to not act on those desires...even if it involves hurting countless others. He likely isn't aware what he's doing is monstrous, but in the sense that he feels it can be justified "in the name of scientific discovery" or something to that effect.
1. What’s the lie your character says most often? "Good" to the question, "How's it going?"
8. How loose is their use of the phrase ‘I love you’? They don't throw it around lightly. Basically, they never throw it around at all. By the beginning of their final Hunter mission, they don't remember the last time they said it, actually. So if they finally find someone they care about enough to say it...it means something.
11. If someone was impersonating them, what would friends / family ask or do to tell the difference? That meme that goes "the real [Roah] would never pass up the opportunity to die".
16. What kinds of people do they have arguments with in their head? They vary quite a bit. It's usually very petty stuff, like thinking of a witty and snarky comeback to some stranger who was rude to them in public. Or planning out a conversation with their boss, like anticipating resistance when taking on a dangerous mission, and what they'll say to change her mind.
Féanne
2. How loosely or strictly do they use the word ‘friend’? Not terribly strict. If it's someone she can share a meal and laugh with, that's pretty much Féanne’s definition of friendship.
4. What’s a hobby they used to have that they miss? She didn't have many hobbies growing up; she wasn't allowed, and the pastimes she was permitted to partake in, she hated. These days she loves reading...and she's tried her hand at jewelry making (she's admittedly not great).
5. Can they cry on command? If so, what do they think about to make it happen? She doesn't cry often. She built up a resistance to it very young. But if she had to cry, she'd probably think of her twin brother's face the day she moved from home.
12. What’s something that makes them laugh every single time? Be specific! When she's cuddling in bed with Lata and she puts her freezing cold feet on his back to make him mad >:]
22. What simple activity that most people do / can do scares your character? Would be more simple/common in-universe, but horseback riding! She never learned and is not a fan of the height off the ground, even if she's just hitching a ride with someone else holding the reins.
Wolfi
4. What’s a hobby they used to have that they miss? Probably cooking. She cooked a lot for the elderly couple she lived with during the Edo period. She doesn’t need to eat, and nobody she hangs around upon being freed from the cursed warehouse eats either, so...
9. Do they give tough love or gentle love most often? Which do they prefer to receive? Gentle love 100%. Both giving and receiving.
19. What would they do if stuck in a room with the person they’ve been avoiding? Try to feign their way through a friendly conversation. If that fails, probably go to the other extreme and fight as a last resort.
24. Did they take a cookie from the cookie jar? What kind of cookie was it? Asked for permission first. It was probably matcha.
2. How much death and/or destruction have they wrought? Directly? Not much. Indirectly or by not doing anything at all?...arguable.
5. What's their moral compass like? Very very naive. Wants to believe everyone is inherently good and will always choose to do what is right. She gets her moral compass from YA novels. It often gets her into dangerous situations...
9. What do they regret the most? Trusting Mahito.
13. What's their relationship to their body? Self esteem? Self image? She's fine with her body as a whole overall, minus the "wanting to become a cursed spirit" aspect of things. While she doesn't like the markings on her face that single her out as not human/"normal", she doesn’t like the process of trying to cover them up, so she just tries to ignore that.
16. What haunts them? Having hurt Kokichi in the past, regardless of if he's forgiven her or not.
Roah
3. Do they try to prevent unnecessary suffering? 100%. Their whole goal in becoming a Crime Hunter was to make sure nobody was hurt like they themself were once hurt. If Roah believes that someone deserves that suffering, though...
6. How far would they go to save someone they love? Would they sacrifice themselves? Others? Would sacrifice everything and thensome. Roah made a Nen contract when they began training, saying they'd sacrifice their Nen to save someone they loved in exchange for a burst of limitless power, thinking they'd never love anyone enough to go through with such a contract. They were wrong...
7. What's their pain tolerance? Relatively high. Not superhuman by any means, but enough that they sometimes don't realize they've been injured. They will often seek out pain to remind themself they're still alive as an (unhealthy) coping mechanism.
12. How easy is it for them to get lost in despair? Very, so they overwork themself to prevent losing themself to it. Distraction is Roah's top priority. They've seen and endured horrific things, and alone, it's quite easy for them to get lost in it. They're prone to nightmares, too.
15. How do they kill? Do they try to minimize suffering? Has never had to kill anyone, but is skilled in the art of torture if circumstances require it. Roah has no empathy for those who hurt others and they have no qualms making that fact known to their targets.
5. What is the song you most associate to them? Gasoline by Halsey! I've been meaning to change it on their ToyHouse page, right now it's Where The Lonely Ones Roam by Digital Daggers.
6. What is their favourite music genre? If they don’t have one, what’s their favourite song? Hmm! They don’t listen to a ton of music but they'd likely put earphones in if they were traveling to pass time. They'd probably like pop punk a lot.
🍁 [MAPLE LEAF] What is your OC's favourite season? Why and what do they do during it? She isn't really picky about seasons! She feels each one has its pros and cons. She does like winter though because she prefers the cold to the excruciating heat...and she finds the snow pretty.
🌰 [CHESTNUT] What food group does your OC mostly eat (e.g., grains, fruits)? She loves veggies (and really does not like red meat, or meat at all, but she wouldn't consider herself a vegetarian). She bakes a lot and likes sweet things, but I don't think dessert is a food group...
🌻 [SUNFLOWER] Where would your OC get lost in the moment/beauty of the place? The forest 🥰 or the beach by the lake in summertime with her sister!
Roah:
🥀 [WILTED ROSE] How good is your OC at meeting deadlines? What motivates them? Roah is pretty good at staying on top of things. They take pride in their work and getting things done right (to the point where if they mess up or fail, they're excruciatingly hard on themself). Their best motivator is iced coffee...for early mornings and long days.
🌱 [SEEDLING] What new passions/hates is your OC discovering? Passions - painting, photography, and listening to music. They didn't have time (or the mental health) to have any true hobbies till they retired from Hunter work. Hates - shoveling snow and working as part of a team vs. independently as a village guard.
Xyvie:
🌿 [HERB] Is your OC religious? What do they believe in? Xyvie doesn't really have a set religion or set of beliefs; she probably thinks that all there is to life is what exists in this lifetime. She'd like to believe in fate, though...if only to hope that all things happen for a reason.
☘️ [SHAMROCK] How passionate is your OC about things they love/hate? Sort of "quietly passionate" for her likes - she will put her energy and thoughts into the things she loves (like cooking and reading) but not go out of her way to discuss her hobbies with anyone unless they ask. You can, however, sort of watch her face light up when she talks about something (or someone) she loves. For hate, it's a bit different...she tries not to hate anything or anyone, but she holds deep seething rage for the person who killed her parents (understandably), and if it's brought up, you can see as her body tenses and her tone of voice turns acidic. It's very very obvious passionate hatred.
Féanne:
🌸 [CHERRY BLOSSOM] Does your OC believe in legends/myths? Not really. Like Xyvie she puts most of her focus on the physical world - things you can touch and see and study. She'd probably find them interesting to read from a historical point of view, though...
💮 [WHITE FLOWER] Has your OC ever kissed someone? Who, when, and where? Besides the chaste kisses on the cheek or hand from boys her parents forced her to dance with at parties, nope - she had a friend with benefits in college, but she had a strict "no kissing on the mouth" rule, so...that's all the experience she has.
