so what's the whole backstory with spitzel, lev, ruth, and judith anyways? i really wanna know about those guys :] they're all so cool
Thank you! So basically:
Lev's father moved with him from Brooklyn to Krakow after Lev's mother passed away due to an illness, and that’s where Spitzel was adopted in an attempt to make Lev feel less alone by giving him a brother. Spitzel was always the "perfect child," while Lev was a rebellious one.
(Here's a sketch of them as children bc why not)
At some point, Spitzel devours their father to gain more control over Lev, stripping him of the person he loved most and deliberately weakening him. This allows Spitzel to start playing mind games with him. (It’s worth mentioning that Lev used to hunt animals with his father, and as a child, he was attacked by a black wolf and nearly died, coincidentally developing a deep fear of dogs/wolves.)
Unaware of the truth, Lev often reports seeing apparitions at night of the monstrous hound that Spitzel transforms into—yet another one of Spitzel’s psychological tricks to exploit his trauma. Because of this, Spitzel insists that his brother is insane and needs therapy. Lev believes him and starts taking medication he shouldn’t, falling into a drugged, psychotic state, which gives Spitzel complete control over him.
In short, Spitzel is simply destroying Lev’s life for his own amusement.
Judith and Ruth:
They have been best friends since childhood. They grew up together in the local community, with Ruth being a German immigrant. Judith always had a deep passion for photography, inspired by her grandmother. Unlike Ruth, who was always popular among both girls and boys, Judith was insignificant.
Ruth is obsessed with beauty and fashion, often sneaking out to meet multiple lovers—a secret only Judith knows. If the community ever found out, it would be a complete scandal.
Since childhood, Ruth has been infatuated with Spitzel. She believes that marrying him will finally make her family proud of her. (She has abusive parents who constantly belittle her, making her feel inadequate and flawed. Because of this, Ruth has always felt it was her duty to please everyone, become the perfect woman, and secure a successful husband.) To get closer to Spitzel, she starts dating Lev. Their relationship is highly unpredictable, as Lev has to deal with Ruth’s emotional crises.
On the other hand, when Spitzel discovers that Judith has uncovered his true nature through one of her photographs, she becomes yet another piece in his game. He formally requests her hand in marriage from her father. Although Spitzel is mysterious and often seen as "odd," he is one of the most influential men in the community (as he is the best at literally everything he does). Without hesitation, Judith’s father arranges the marriage. Of course, Spitzel feels nothing for her—he only wants to toy with her and ruin her life before she can interfere with his plans.
After this, Ruth grows resentful of Judith, believing she is deliberately stealing Spitzel from her. She becomes a toxic friend and spirals into alcoholism. In desperation, she starts an affair with Spitzel behind Lev’s back. Eventually, she discovers that Spitzel is an entity, abandons her former beliefs, and begins worshiping him as her one true god, aiding him in destroying others. However, Spitzel merely uses Ruth—he feels nothing for her.
In short, Judith must try to prove to everyone that Spitzel is not human and save her life and her friends' lives, while Spitzel plays mind games with everyone.
NEW CHARACTER JUST DROPPED!!! Ruth Grosz/Ruth Groß (25y.o) is Judith's best friend since childhood. Ruth has always supported Judith through her life and is the only person Judith considers her true friend, but despite everything, Ruth is very problematic and grew up with many demands to be an exemplary woman in her community. Ruth came to Krakow with her parents from Germany when she was still a child and soon became very popular in the local community. During her teens she started to become obsessed with beauty stuff, which made her very vain. She is always well-groomed and in makeup, she also likes to wear expensive clothes and is currently working as a hairdresser and making sheitel wigs. Her beauty and personality attract many looks and many men want to marry her, making her very desired. She constantly goes on secret dates with her suitors and the only person who knows about it is Judith, who worries a lot about what the community will think of her friend if they find out but she keeps the secret. She never married and this caused many in the community to start questioning her modesty. After a while, she starts a relationship with Lev, who seems to really love her and always presents her with clothes and accessories that he makes himself. He is also always concerned about her well-being and tries to be as supportive as possible, but although she tries to act satisfied, she never is. Apparently she approached Lev so she could be closer with Spitzel, and he begins to notice this eventually and their relationship begins to deteriorate and they start to feel mixed feelings for each other. It is a fact that Ruth feels a great need for approval from people, as she was never able to please her parents since childhood and must restrain herself from being her true self by the rules of the community. Despite all that, she is really talented at her job. After Judith's family decided to arrange the marriage to Spitzel, Ruth became extremely jealous as she has feelings for Spitzel since her childhood. She ends up getting angry with Judith, even though Judith doesn't feel anything for Spitzel, and then the friendship between them becomes extremely toxic. Ruth begins to treat her friend with inferiority, and begins to get restless to the point that she decides to make everything to ruin the wedding and win Spitzel for her. She knows that being married with the most talented man in her community will finally please her family, and this made her pin all her hopes on marrying him. After this, her mental health begins to decline significantly, and she turns to drinking and smoking, always getting drunk and having emotional breakdowns. Her personality will also change drastically and she will start to be labeled as "crazy". Upon learning about Spitzel's true nature, she becomes even more obsessed with him, and begins to consider him her true "god". He realizes that he can use her to his advantage, and so the two begin to have a hidden relationship and she helps him with the stuff.
