Veronica Dentz walked nervously behind her mother, the cold, echoing halls of the hospital seemed infinitely long.
Her back feet padded quietly against the tile floors, her hands cradled in front of her.
She couldn’t help but stare down at them, observing the long, pointed blue claws that protruded from what were once soft, innocent paws.
23 hours.
She had counted each and every one, since her brother had died.
She swallowed anxiously at the nurse in the reception area, as her mother turned and walked out the doors.
Suddenly her heart dropped and fear set in. She was alone.
Numb, she allowed herself to be lead along into her room, where she was given fresh, un-bloodstained clothes. Sleep did not come very easy.
---
Veronica sat in the corner of the room, her head down and her hands gently clamped over her ears, attempting to block out the noises of the other kids without digging her claws into her head.
They were loud and the noise scared her.
“Hey!”
Panic quickly spiked through her as a girl bounded over and she flinched for fear of a blow as they stuck out her hand.
“C’mon, shake it!”
She slowly opened an eye to look at the person before her.
Around the same height, she was a deep purple and covered in scratches and bandages, a huge smile on her face and her eyes covered by sunglasses. The top swirl of hair between her ears was messy, and a small curl stuck up on top of it.
Veronica shakily and carefully put her hand into the others, and her grip tightened around Veronicas hand and shook it almost violently.
“I’m Lavender,” she grinned, as Veronica took back her hand and rubbed it gingerly, avoiding the claws.
“You’re new right? I didn’t see you come in.”
Veronica stared at this ‘peer’ that had already manhandled her. She seemed obnoxious and stupid, loud and reckless.
Hugo.
Veronicas green warbling eyes reflected off the glasses, and she drew herself up, determined to never associate anything with her brother ever again.
“Ronnie,” she said.
“My name is Ronnie.”
Lavender laughed, giving her a ‘friendly’ slap on the back, nodding her head to the other kids.
“I’ll introduce you.”
Veronica nibbled the inside of her cheek as she walked over. This girl was certainly..something. She liked it.
“Ronnie, this is Breeze, Hazel.”
The two waved, both brown patterned and seemed just as stupid as Lavender, less so however.
“Over there is Viane, Evergen and Coral.”
In the other corner, two of three girls waved back, the shortest a sweet looking peach color. The tallest magenta, gave a small smile and turned back to the one on the far right, who had mostly disregarded Veronica.
“Ah!” Lavender belted suddenly, shaking Ronnie from her distracted stupor. “Here’s Paradox.”
Veronica was struck with a sudden spike in heart rate.
Tall, and silky blue, she looked warm in the eyes but cold in expression. Her eyes travelled down to Paradoxs’ tail, which was like her own, long with a tuft on the end.
“Hello.” Her voice was softer and more approachable than Lavenders. She stuck out her hand, and Ronnie shook it gently this time.
“Your claws are interesting,” she remarked, and Ronnie’s interest turned quickly to suspicion and anxiety, as the others eyes darted around her, as though she could see something.
“Uh, yeah, I-“
She was cut off as Lavender grabbed her by the wrist and tugged her away and over to the others.
“That was gonna get boring, let’s play chicken instead! Nobody else wants me to sit on their shoulders.”
Veronica laughed quietly as she watched Breeze hop onto Hazel, and Lavender beckoned her over.
She was going to get along here just fine without Hugo or her mother.
