Rebecca’s love for fighting started in public school in Brooklyn when she was five and constantly picked on by older kids. She decided that she couldn't keep running; she had to learn how to fight. One day, she grabbed a boy by his shirt, kicked him, and hit his head on the gate; he sustained a concussion and she was suspended for a few days, but after her first taste of violence, she was no longer concerned with the consequences. Bex wasn't satisfied unless she was fighting.
In high school, Rebecca learned kick-boxing and trained with a teacher who continuously beat her up; but even with her constant losses, she kept going back, determined to learn as much as possible and eventually win. However, her mother was fed up with her behaviour and sent her away to a boarding school in Massachusetts to learn discipline and earn her GED, which she never got, although the change did temporarily get her out of trouble. She focused her energy and passion on Kung Fu, and began competing in MMA events in New York in an amateur, unsanctioned MMA league. Although her family wasn't happy with her fighting and hated seeing her injured, they no longer attempted to interfere as Rebecca was determined to continue regardless of how they felt.
Although unconcerned about the lack of payment, Bex picked up a day job at a shady convenience store to help pay bills; all free time was put toward training, attending and participating in MMA events. By the time she was twenty, she had only lost two out of her six fights, and though she was nowhere near fame, others in the community were beginning to recognize her name. People either praised her for her strength or laughed at her for encroaching upon a male-dominated sport, but Rebecca was altogether apathetic toward the opinions of others; regardless of how others viewed her, her only ambition was to work hard, round her skills, and one day compete in the Ultimate Fighting Championship.
And it seemed like she was well on her way there, when during what was initially a normal day at work someone was slammed against the store’s outside glass. It wasn't a surprising action considering the neighbourhood and her own hobbies, and Bex paid no attention to it, hoping that the cops wouldn't bother questioning her about it. She soon found out that things were a little different than she thought when the screams started, and when she finally walked outside and saw the wreckage and torn bodies, she immediately began sprinting with a single objective in mind: to find her family. Rebecca managed to find her brother, and together they escaped from a city that was quickly falling to insanity.
The two travelled far in an attempt to find somewhere safe. Rebecca was hopeful that there would be other people in the same situation who would surely agree that they were better off helping each other, but this ideal become increasingly cracked the further they moved. After several encounters with bandits, Bex’s hope was nearly lost—until they found a camp. It wasn't exactly fortified, but the residents, upon noticing them, immediately offered them a place; they had food, water, shelter, weapons… all things that they had been searching for. At the time, it seemed like the best option, and they agreed to join with little hesitation.
However, because of the camp’s minimal protection, it wasn't long before it was overrun by the infected, and during the process of trying to run away, Rebecca was separated from her brother. She managed to salvage a bag of food and a few weapons before the camp was completely taken, but despite how long she searched for him, she couldn't find him, and ultimately accepted that he was dead and she had no choice but to move on. This was the last straw; while her hope had been teetering on an edge, she lost all belief in the greater good of humanity and decided she could only rely on herself. This meant she had to be willing to do whatever it took to stay alive: kill infected, kill the living, steal, trick, lie, whatever it was, she did it, keeping the memory of her family close, as her reason to keep going.
Rebecca arrived at New Barton Hollow, and her plan was to trade some supplies and get the hell out of there, instead she found herself wandering its tall walls on guard duty and its newest resident. She’s seen other members of Barton Hollow wandering around, but she’s sure that they’re not trustworthy and refuses to take any chances; as long as they don’t bother her, she won’t bother them.
Prior to the outbreak, Bex was the walking definition of outgoing: constantly starting conversations with people on the streets, treating everyone as a friend, willing to offer anyone a helping hand. Despite her aggressive fighting personality, she was well-liked by others for her dry and sarcastic sense of humour, as well as her empathy. She seemed to be, for the most part, a genuinely kind person, if a little misguided at times.
Now, Rebecca is extremely reserved, much more affected by the presumed death of her brother than she likes to let on. While she retains her humour, it’s rare that anyone has an opportunity to see it; when approached, Rebecca immediately goes on the defensive, ready to kill if necessary. She isn't a bad person, but she’s incredibly distrusting and is entirely convinced that she can only rely on herself and others will only bring her down.
Bex is a combat person through and through; she prefers to scout and scavenge for supplies but has found herself stuck patrolling a wall. She is willing to do dangerous and life-threatening jobs that no one else wants to volunteer for and when she’s not needed in those roles, she’s also capable of acting as a mechanic; as long as she gets to use her hands and keep moving, she’s satisfied.
