Whether you've heard of it or not, the Gill Tract occupation is alive and well on the border of Albany and Berkeley, after one full week. The farm occupation is a response to UC Berkeley's plan to sell part of the research land for a development project that would potentially include a Whole Foods (yes, another one in Berkeley). It is also a larger call for action directed at food justice issues in the Bay Area. I helped start the farm on Earth Day and have gained a lot of excitement about the community that has been created around it. It is an excellent example of how urban agriculture can be integrated into the surrounding landscape; it will be interesting to see how the UC will eventually respond to this action (aside from shutting off the main water line). In the meantime. Spread the word about it! And visit the farm, if you can! One way you can spread the word is by watching this video I created today and posted on YouTube. I put together a collection of footage I've taken from prior Occupy protests and this current occupation to shed some light on the situation. occupy: I found other people, fell in love, woke from my slumber, now make art everyday, started writing, got rid of possessions, learned the value of life- starved, learned how to be arrested, screamed louder than I thought I could, felt the cold nights, felt warm bodies...I threw away the American dreams and occupied my hands to create an honest reality which has no need for dreaming. One sentence I have some contention with: "We also have continuously invested in improving the undergraduate academic experience by updating classroom facilities with technology and adding Reading and Composition classes, gateway courses in the physical sciences, and foreign language courses."

It would seem basic chair-and-table technology is BEYOND the scope of this, seeing as most classrooms I'm in don't have enough chairs for the number of students enrolled in the class and most of the lab tables in leconte are seriously wobbly. But hey, man, THERE ARE TELEVISIONS IN GBC! AND THEY SHOW THE MENU! WHICH IS EXACTLY WHAT THE OLD MENUS DID! ONLY NOW THEY'RE SHINY AND EXPENSIVE! </rant>

So yeah. You know Occupy will totally be taking at least some credit for this, even though the protests aren't explicitly mentioned in the campus-wide email. 

Also, I want to state for the record, I don't think Birgeneau is a bad guy (despite my bull-shit detecting comment).

Occupiers from Oakland march to UC Berkeley

Occupy Oakland demonstrators marched to UC Berkeley on Saturday night to support and show solidarity with Occupy Cal. The move comes after 18 Occupy Cal protesters were detained on Friday.
