Hello, I was wondering if you had any advice on how to get a fanfiction noticed? I have just started writing my first ever fanfiction and have published the first chapter. I have tried to write a compelling synopsis and I would like to believe that my chapter is enticing also. Is there anything else I can do? (I have written it under the name wavesketcher and it is called 'A Different Engraving')
I don’t think I’m the person to come to, lol, my first fic was mostly ignored by fandom. But after it was done I was lucky to have it recced by someone well-known in fandom and a few more people started subscribing to me/reading my fic! It honestly took a long, long time with a lot of consistent writing before more people started reading my fics. Most of the most top-kudosed/faved writers in fandom are that because they’ve been prolific!
BUT if you’ve written something good, it can also stand by itself nicely! I know a lot of people who rec fics that seem promising and they get around like that, so it’s always possible. :) I really just recommend that you’re patient and you write for yourself first and foremost (even if reviews/readers help a LOT) because it’s important that you’re not dependent on someone else’s feelings to get things done.
My other advice is to post small excerpts on tumblr as you write (with a link to the fic) and tag them “swan queen,” excerpts to pique people’s interest while scrolling through the tag and make them remember your fic! There are definitely some blogs that promote fics, too, though I can’t think of them offhand (anyone?).
Just keep writing and do the best you can there, because that’s the number one way to bring in readers. :)
