Tying into my word vomit on characterization and writing for clarity, let’s talk about ships.  Because I have some peeves here, too (shocker!).  Like, everyone’s gonna ship what they want to, and for the most part, hey, sure, great, I can blacklist what squicks me and what I think is implausible and move on with my life, but this is an airing of grievances, so air them I shall.

Personally - and again, this is not going to win me any favors, I know - if a person will ship their character with anyone, I’m a little leery.  Because it feels like they’re not taking their character - who they are, their likes and dislikes, interactions between characters - into account.  A character isn’t going to go down a roster and bang everyone on it.  They’re just not.  It’s almost like characters are like real people and have preferences in partners and romance and won’t actually want to screw everyone they meet.  

I say this because I’m picky about Hector, because Hector is picky about Hector.  When it comes to ships, there has to be a certain something there for it to take and to stick, and right now I’m pretty satisfied that, while I’m slow as balls and Tony Stark has been eating the headspace at the moment, all of his ships are good solid ones.  Because there’s chemistry.  Because there’s real development.  Because I do look at a potential ship and ask myself how he’d feel about it.  How he and another character will get along.  How both of them will handle the strain of what a relationship with him would be like.  I can’t just toss him at someone and add water.  He’s headstrong and highstrung and hard to handle and if he’s not interested, he’s just not.  Honestly, I don’t really see a character and right off have to have him in a ship with them - I like seeing who the characters on my dash are, and if I see potential, I see potential.  But I don’t understand the mindset of constant ships, constantly, when other relationships are important, and some characters are just flat out not compatible and it takes mental gymnastics to even make it work, instead of finding someone it develops, on its own, naturally with.

there’s little room to be spared, though the villagers and tia dalma make sure to give will and elizabeth their own room.  they think we’re married, will realizes as he’s escorted into the space, french rapidly dispensing from the seemingly sympathetic woman.  he’s never learned french himself, so he says nothing to the woman, waiting until she has left him alone with elizabeth to break the heavy silence.   

❝ you should retire to the bed and get some rest. ❞   there is only one, but he’ll be alright on the floor.  he gingerly shrugs out of his coat  —  the days since he left port royal are beginning to show their course, now that he has stilled and settled  —  settling it onto the wooden planks for a makeshift pillow.

it had began when they were children.

little whistled tunes of sea shanties began when he was five, forced-choir singing when he was eight, and soft hums when he was fifteen. at this time, he had been in the navy for some time and began to grow tiresome of the songs that hummed from his lips at the strangest moments.

whenever songs would fight their way to the surface of his lips, his mind would go to the person who was, possibly, his soulmate. were they a navyman too? would their paths ever cross?

did they hate him? he was quite the performer, singing loudly with his crew every eve. at least, he had been. he became much quieter with him around.

standing in the cold rain and bobbing on his toes, he watched as the small rower made its way over to the great ship. it bobbed and weaved in the storm, the two boatswain on board pushing on with a bored determination rarely seen. a nervous hum welled in archie kennedy’s throat as he watched the young man get ever closer. the sea chest read “H. Hornblower” in crisp, golden lettering, he noted as the pasty man looked up at the ship worridly. he couldn’t have been much older then archie himself- they may have even been the same age!

“ jump ! you’ll be alright ! ” he called to the new midshipman, watching as he jumped to the ladder and clambered up.

holding out a hand and helping him onto the sogging deck of the ship, archie gave him a charming grin. “ welcome to purgatory !”

" -----Dr. Maturin, was it. ” His voice is flat; it’s not a question. The lieutenant remembers ALL TOO WELL their first meeting. He had been in a black mood that day to begin with, and it had soured the meeting, but neither had the good doctor given Hux any hope that fairer weather on his part would bring better winds. “ I must say you seem even less suited to the sea now that we are actually upon it. You’re not prone to SEASICKNESS, I hope? ”

❝ m-miss swann. ❞   he’s done a fine job of keeping distance between them over the last few years  —  hiding or slipping away whenever she comes looking, or keeping to the shadows when he sees her passing by.  his cheeks reflexively begin to burn, flushing red, and his throat dries instantaneously, forcing him to clear his throat anxiously.  he wipes his hands on his trousers upon setting aside his hammer atop the anvil.  his work clothes are sweaty, and he’s scantily clothed  —  for the presence of such a fine lady  —  in the heat of summer and the forge.   

❝ i  ———  have you come for an order?  or... ❞   he knows nothing else to ask, nervously fidgeting with the buttons of his vest and smoothing back some of his mussed and unkempt hair.

“I don’t know.”

The admission seemed to tear something from him, some small piece he had been clinging to. Hope, perhaps, that Archie would not become so broken as he was. For him, hope was already lost, and the most he could dare ask for was to spare others the same fate at Jack’s hands, which he tried to do as often as he could― but not often enough. Years ago, he had thought he’d escape- but ten years at sea had only seen Jack Simpson’s hold upon him grow stronger, leaving almost no chance of escape. 

He did not want that same fate to be faced by any other, but Jack had taken a liking to Archie Kennedy- and there was only so much Clayton could do to get between the man and what he wanted. 

“With luck, he’ll grow bored and leave you alone, hmm?” he suggested, knowing it was little comfort- but also knowing that without some hope to cling to the sunny young man would end up a hollow husk, just like himself. Slowly, he reached a hand out to lay on Archie’s arm, offering what scraps he could. “Better yet, the war will start again, and you’ll be moved to another ship- perhaps a frigate, even- Archie! Wouldn’t that be grand?”

It had been a matter of time. Her reputation as 'Flint's Witch' had been contained to only the whispered crew superstition before, but after surviving a grazed shot to the head and being complicit in burning Charlestown to the ground, that reputation had become somewhat legendary.

The woman that controlled the mad dog that could burn England to the ground, so they said.

The Navy had been formal enough, leaving her in their captain's cabin with not a single untoward comment, and Miranda couldn't have claimed to be surprised that it was indeed the Pellew with which she was long ago acquainted with that stepped into the room after a long few moment. "I told you your rise would be meteoric." She commented, carefully still in her seat and not quite as friendly as one that had known her Before would expect.
