The sight of a packed bag sitting on the edge of the bed wasenough of an answer that Dazai didn’t feel the need to ask the question thathad driven him straight from headquarters to Oda’s place. He tried to keep hisvoice even as he said, “Mori’s sending you on a suicide mission.”

“Orders are orders, Dazai. You know that.”

It was exactly the calm response Dazai anticipated, and hehated it. He hated how, after the dozens of times he had tried to leave thisEarth, Odasaku was the one walking straight into death’s arms as if he wasn’tgoing to be taking the last shreds of Dazai’s heart with him. He didn’t realizehis hands were clenched until one of Oda’s was gently prying his fist apartand he was being enveloped in a hug.

“Take care of yourself, okay?”

Dazai dropped his head so his face was hidden in Oda’sshoulder, but he didn’t trust himself to speak. He merely soaked in the comfortof the embrace and let himself pretend that, maybe, there was more behind Odasaku’ssoft words of comfort than friendship.
