The best explanation is that the episode basically didn't know it's arse from it's elbow and this is just another of their mistakes. Another possibility (but a rather vague idea of mine), is that her costume during her performance is based on costumes used in the Chinese opera. Definitely in the UK, opera and circus are NOT the same thing at all.
Yes, probably, ugh. Chinese opera IIRC also contains productions that are more consistent with Western dramas (ie it's not all singing all the time like Western opera) so maybe if the circus act was more of a morality play. But still the 'singer' part of opera singer is throwing me.
