Indika (PS5)
A Gilliamesque short story about a nun experiencing hallucinations of an omnipresent, devilish narrator, who is dispatched to deliver a letter and spare the other nuns from her presence. She is soon joined by an escaped convict following the voice of god on his own ersatz pilgrimage, and Indika’s doubts and her companion’s growing faith form the spine of the story. The action applies universal videogamey mechanics to the more surreal parts of the setting (it is never clear whether the cyclopean cows and titanic church bells are alternate history or distorted perception). An ever present score for piety is topped up by gleaming tokens, which you are constantly reminded mean nothing. It’s human, affecting, weird and concise, enough to overlook the frequently wonky audio mix and occasional unpleasant rumble feature.
