Dysfunctional Animal Couples of New York
Saxophone-Playing Rat and French Bulldog
The two met in a subway car where Alfie, the rat, took up saxophone playing after escaping a hard knock life on the L train subway tracks. Alfie first laid eyes on Jacqueline, the French Bulldog through the netting of a pink mesh Versace toy-dog-tote-bag. It's a classic poor boy meets rich girl story that will eventually end in alimony disputes.
Central Park Squirrel and Cockroach
These two met while scavenging a garbage can for leftover food. It all began when the squirrel mistook the cockroach for an acorn and nearly ate him alive. Now they live together. The cockroach has had a hard time adjusting though. Moving from the inside of a wall to the innards of a tree has been difficult. This yearning for home has only led to tension in the relationship.
Domesticated Cat and Pigeon
This unlikely pair met on a midtown windowsill. Xena, the cat, was trying to escape her overly affectionate and needy owner, when she encountered the pigeon on the building ledge. Their common denominator -- their Sartre-like distain for humans -- was once what brought them together, but now it is the wedge that drives them apart.
Genetically Modified Chinatown Turtle and Bedbug
These critters met in a studio apartment on the Lower East Side. Right off the bat they realized that they had a lot in common, like that they both grew up in dirty, crowded environments. It was only a matter of time before the genetically modified turtle was arrested for being illegal and the bed bug moved to Brooklyn.

So the other day I was watching a recent addition to Netflix....Odd Animal Couples....and they were saying how some scientists still didn't believe animals had the ability to have friendships. Now, personally, I believe animals have almost equal general brain function as humans, just on a lower level. Anyway, through it all they were showing all these cute animals who had bonded together like lions and dogs and goats and bunnies. At the end of it all, I realized that in the wild these animals definitely would have attacked each other, but it was human compassion that brought them together. That made me realize just how much power we as humans really have. We idolize animals for their simplicities sometimes, but I think they're just as complex as we are, just less evolved and it's part of our duty to help them discover their inner compassions to create a more peaceful world. We have so much undiscovered power.
