on the one hand, it’s probably high time that the quietest, most go-along-to-get-along character on this show finally has gotten the chance to be really, truly angry and upset about something, and express it with both his loved ones and enemies. hugh’s probably the most passive character on a ship full of impulsive types, leaders, and rebels; he’s practical and reasonable, he stays calm, he does his job, he doesn’t fuss. he’s spent a lot of time revolving around other people; his patients, his husband, clearly the character who does a lot of the interpersonal heavy lifting quietly, and when that’s who you are and you have a personal crisis, it makes sense that it’s likely to be worse. there’s a lot of pent-up trauma in this little dude and it’s right that he should get to be emotional about it and not have a clear idea of who he is or what to do next, and it makes good sense that he would push people away when in the depths of this stuff.
