Odisha Flood Update: 4 More Gates Of Hirakud Dam Closed As Inflow Of Water Decreases
With gradual decrease in the inflow of water into Mahanadi River from the upper catchment areas of Chhattisgarh, the Hirakud dam authorities have closed four more sluice gates of the reservoir.
At present, the inflow of floodwater in Hirakud is 4,94,094 lakh cusecs per second while the outflow is 6,65,624 lakh cusecs per second. The water level of the reservoir stands at 627.29 feet as against its full capacity of 630 feet.
Meanwhile, excess water is being discharged through 36 of the 64 sluice gates of the Hirakud Dam.
The reservoir authorities said keeping in view the inflow of water into the dam, more gates will be closed later in the day.
The high level flow of water reaching Mundali barrage in Cuttack from Hirakud Dam in Sambalpur will last for five hours and is likely to gradually decline between 10 am to 11 am, sources said.
“Over 10.02 lakh cusecs of water passed through the Mundali barrage and peak flow of floodwater will continue for 24 hours and recede between 10- 11 am today. However, the inflow of water has considerably decreased. The excess release of floodwater will trigger flood-like situation in Puri, Jagatsinghpur and Kendrapada districts,” said Special Relief Commissioner (SRC) Pradeep Kumar Jena.
Currently, the inflow of water at Mundali is 9,23,750 cusecs per second.

Kendrapara: Fire personnel on Sunday rescued a family stranded for around 4 days in flood from the coastal district of the State.
As per information, five members of a family including 3 children were trapped in Kaithapal island near Rajkanika after floodwater gushed into their area following rise in water level in Brahmani and Baitarani river.
As the family could not return back to high dry ground, they had to spend 4 days on the top of their house amid the flood.
They lived on whatever they had during the period and also sometimes had to sleep without food, but their hopes never faded.
Informed about the family, the fire personnel deployed in the region for the flood swung into action and rescued the family from the jaws of death.
Odisha Floods: ‘Dynamite Used To Create 300 ft breach On Kelua River Embankment In Jajpur’
The opposition BJP in Odisha on Monday launched a scathing attack on BJD in connection with reported blowing off of Kelua river embankment in Jajpur district and alleged involvement of the ruling party leaders in the mischievous act.
Addressing a presser here, BJP State general secretary Lekhasri Samantsinghar said, “The 300 feet breach in Kelua river embankment at Ramapur area under Dharmasala block was deliberately created by blowing it off using dynamite. Odisha Chief Secretary Asit Tripathy and the district collector have admitted that the breach is manmade.”
“BJD MLA Pranab Balabantaray and his maternal uncle Naren Jena alias Badal Jena, who is a junior engineer, are involved in the act. Jena has been in Dharmasala division since last 20 years” Samantsinghar alleged.
A whooping Rs 24.42 crore was spent to revamp the 20-foot wide embankment last year so that it can withstand any kind of floods. “Those, who have restored the embankment last year, have deliberately destroyed it to embezzle the money this year too,” Samantsinghar said.
Demanding stringent action against the Balabantaray and Jena, the BJP leader said cases should be filed against them under Explosive Act and National Disaster Management Act for putting public lives at risk.
Meanwhile, police have launched an investigation into the matter after assistant engineer of Jaraka Irrigation department Kamadev Das filed an FIR in this regard. No arrests have been made so far.
Chief Engineer Of Water Resources department Jyotirmaya Rath said, “So far 36 breaches created in river embankments including 5 breaches in Mahanadi River system. FIR has been lodged in connection with creation of artificial breach in Kelua river embankment using dynamite. District administration will take action.”
