Montreal: Protest in Support of Political Prisoners of the G20, Toronto 2010
Yesterday, a group of about one hundred people gathered in front of the CBC building in Montreal to protest the mass arrest of 1100 protesters during last year's G20 summit in Toronto. The protest, organized by the Organisation for the Defense of Political Prisoners, aimed its demands at the media and the public to end the repression by the Conservative government, and to allow people their freedom of expression.
Several speeches were given from arrestees and organizers, and then the march was underway. The group took a leisurely stroll up to Ste. Catherine in the Village, after which they proceeded towards the Quartier Latin, and finally to the gates of the Montreal Jazz Festival on de Maisonneuve. It was altogether peaceful, joyous, and always rather raucous. Many chants for democracy, freedom of speech and against repression could be heard throughout the march, and after a concluding speech from several comrades, the group dispersed without any problems.
The fight for the right to dissent and dissidence within this society is necessary for all people to express themselves and contribute to a better society. Whether our ideals lie in 'radical' political spheres or not, we are all painfully aware of the lack of impact our voices have on the people that govern us. Protests like these, however small they may be, are a necessary demonstration of our rights and of democracy. It was especially fitting that this protest mark the anniversary of the illegal and highly repressive G20 arrests in Toronto. 1100 is a record, apparently...
