#1585 - Antictenia punctunculus

Previously known as Monoctenia punctunculus. 

A large Oenochromine Geometrid, currently swarming in their millions around Brisbane Queensland, and adjacent areas. This one was photographed by Lisa Miller in Waruran, Queensland. Seeing one by itself is remarkable, given some of the other photos I’ve been sent.

People have been pulling them out of industrial equipment by the thousands. 

Obviously, conditions must have been ideal for them this year, but I can’t find any information on what the caterpillars actually eat. Whatever it is, there can’t have been much left of it by the end of the year. 

(EDIT: Ironbark leaves, and probably other Eucalypts - the caterpillars are also swarming)

#1286 - Gastrophora henricaria - Beautiful Leaf Moth

AKA Fallen-bark Looper

Seen by Merri Golding, on NSW’s Southern Tablelands.

A large Oenochromine Geometrid moth, with female up to 8 cm in wingspan, and males slightly smaller. Native to the SE corner of Australia, where the caterpillars feed on various Eucalypts and Box Brushes.

The sexes are similarly marked, although the males have a dark line across the forewing. The undersides have a vivid purple and yellow warning flash.
