It was a nice day. Suki had claimed so herself three times today, twice to strangers and once in a text message to a faraway friend. The weatherman on TV this morning told her himself. It was Yelp that had told her about this sports bar. And apparently, the sports bar had not watched this morning’s weather report. As soon as the door closed behind her the dim bar lighting enveloped everything. Most of the tables were empty so early in the day, a few older men sat at the bar with beers in front of them. A small handful of others sat at tables around the bar. All eyes were on the televisions that lined the walls.
Suki slid into an empty booth and flipped open a menu. According to Yelp, the homemade potato chips were to die for. According to Suki, the sliders sounded pretty good too. She ordered with her best smile and sat back to wait for her food. At the bar, one of the men began shouting at the TV angrily, throwing his hands in the air in exasperation. Some people get so worked up over sports. Suki’s eyes turn uncontrollably toward the nearest television, curious to find out what exactly he’s yelling about. On the screen, two teams run across an Exy field, the ball still in play. Whatever the man was yelling about is long over now.
She continues to watch while she waits, kicking her heels against the base of the booth. Suki had never really taken a liking to the sport. It always seemed unnecessarily rough and a bit chaotic. She much preferred baseball or soccer, both of which she played as a kid. But with nothing better to do, she might as well watch.
Finally, the waiter who took her order reappears, this time with food in hand. She thanks him and settles in, taking a bite of one of the sliders. She was right. Delicious. And Yelp had been right about the chips as well. Suki grinned, mentally congratulating herself on the good find. The man at the bar shouted at the TV again. She looked up but it was too late, whatever had happened clearly wasn’t happening anymore. “Damnit! I keep missing the good parts.” She frowned and glanced around, eyes locking onto the guy at a nearby table who seemed to be paying attention to the game, “hey! What happened, why is he yelling now?”
