Despite his reputation, Jim Kirk is a good student -- one of the best, actually. When it comes time for his on-ship residency, he’s top in the command track and proudly boasts scores that haven’t been seen in ages. Turns out, all Jim needed to get his act together was a little bit of direction and a fresh start. In his third year, Jim can finally start to see the vision and believe in his abilities to become captain. One of the best ways there? Through a residency on the Fleet’s flagship.
First on Jim’s list of ships is, of course, the Enterprise. It’s Chris’s ship and it’s brand new. What isn’t there to love about it? Jim would die to command a ship like that some day.
It’s not entirely surprising that he gets the position onboard the Enterprise. He hears the rumors -- there are more than a few students who believe good, old fashioned nepotism get him the spot, but they don’t know Chris like Jim does. He’d never pull shit like that. Jim earned his spot here by being the best of the best, just like everyone else onboard the ship. He worked his ass off for something like this and finally it’s started to pay off.
And, after all that hard work, Jim’s done his very best to make sure his behavior doesn’t get him kicked off the Enterprise.
When Captain Pike summons him for a meeting, Jim’s nervous the whole walk there, mind spinning as he tries to understand what he could have possibly messed up or done wrong to warrant any sort of discipline. Nothing comes to mind and that only makes all that worrying worse.
Once Jim arrives at the room, he asks the computer to let Chris know he’s outside, figuring the captain will call him in when he’s ready.
