@ofchargers​  𝒔𝒂𝒊𝒅  :   fashionably late , gilbert gently shoves a small present into rod's hands . it even has a card with it . huh ... " happy birthday , old man . actually got you something this year ! " the card says ' happy birthday ; in dog years you're dead ' . but inside is a handwritten note that says " never change you princess . " and the present , meticulously wrapped , is ... a pour le mérite , military class . it looks like gilbert's not willing to offer an explanation just yet ...

SLENDER   FINGERS   CLOSE   THE  CARD  ;   it   is   very    gilbert ,    roderich   could   not   have   expected   anything   else .    the   wrapped   present ,   however ,   is   an   entirely   different   story .   roderich   hesitates   before   lifting   it   out   of   the   box ,   the   blue   of   the   medal   catching   the   light .    

roderich   has   many   medals .   there   are   all   laid   neatly   &   quietly   in   a   drawer   ,   underneath   a   red   velvet   throw   to   keep   them   from   gathering   dust .   he   never   wears   them .   HE   DOESN ’ T   DESERVE   TO   WEAR  THEM .   roderich   never   participated   in   war ,   not   when   he   was   awarded   the   military   order   of   maria   theresia  ,   not   the   golden   cross .   he   did ,   only   so   many   years   ago ,   sit   next   to   dying   soldiers   during   the   first   world   war .   he   eased   their   pains ,   wrote   their   letters   to   their   loved   ones ,   &   most   importantly ,   he   played .   played   the   broken   little   piano   in   the   hospital   &   sung   songs   he   would   have   never   considered   singing   in   his   world   of   palaces   &   marble   &   colour . 

gently ,   he    places   the   medal   back   into   the   box ,   his   hands   a   little   shaky .   ❛      would   you   like   to   come   in ?    i   have   strudel .     ❜

          It appeared the Maker did have a sense of humour to arrange this meeting. While back in Kirkwall, Boudicca’s attempt on pelting the Templar-Commander may have been a rather well thought out plan at the time as there were witnesses, but she had not thought of the possibility on once again seeing the very Knight-Templar who served as the second-in-command. Perhaps a little older, and she prayed a little more open-minded, but not doubt the same man.

          ❛   When they said that the Commander of the Inquisition's forces was once a Templar, I did not picture you in that position.   ❜   Truth be told, she thought the Commander was a man older than herself by at least a decade, with flecks of gray adorning his hair and eyes that made all quake in their armour. Not this man with a puppy dog face.   ❛   Looks must be deceiving here, you must be carrying a first rate military mind to command the Inquisition forces.   ❜

surprise starter for @ofchargers (semi continuation from x )

She nodded at the commanders answer, even when he stumbled and backtracked.

“Yes, being settled down is nice, i hope to be back in that phase of my life soon.” She agreed. “A marabi pup would be nice too. Fighting them is heartbreaking.”

A bird caws and she subtly looks to the sky, spotting a black and white bird circling skyhold. Her face brightens from a restrained posture, but the insight into what the inquisitor looks like when surprised, when happy, is nyxed as she turns away from the blonde, hand in the air and whistle loud. The bird swoops down, landing on her offered hand.

Rounding somewhat back to where she stood with the commander, she unfurled the small note from the magpies leg. Brows furrow as she reads the text on the scrap piece of paper, then shock flicks over her features before her face hardens once again to the usual somewhat harsh neutral expression. 

“Commander, will you follow me?” she asks, before moving towards the stairs.

HE   IS   AT   HIS   PIANO   BENCH ,   having   decided   to   play   when   ludwig   had   been   led   in   by   the   staff ,   but   finding   himself   unable   to   do   so .   his   hands   are   shaky  ---   he   always   quits   smoking   at   least   three   days   before   ludwig   arrives   by   carriage ,   stopping   the   minute   that   the   letter   is   placed   in   his   hands   by   the   messenger .   he   doesn ’ t   want   ludwig   to   see   him   like   that ,   to   see   just   how   much   the   war   over   him   had   hurt ,   how   much   the   scar ,   which   still  refuses   to   heal  (  which   is   ugly   &   stains   roderich ’ s   skin   &   causes   him   to   avoid   the   mirrors   because   god ,   god ,   he   had   never   had   to   deal   with   imperfection   &   now   he   does   &   it   hurts )   bothers   him .   

❛      i   am   a   little   tired ,   darling ,    ❜     he   says ,   reaching   for   ludwig ’ s   hand   &   sitting   him   in   his   lap ,   arms   wrapping   around   his   waist   as   he   sighs ,   breathing   into   his   hair .   he   never   understood   humans ’   obsession  with   children .   even   when   he   looked   after   katerina ,  it   had   never   been   like   this .   she   had   been   passed   to   him   as   an   adolescent ,   headstrong ,   with   her   own   opinions .   he   looks   after   mikola   in   a   way ,   too .   but   mikola   is   older   than   him ,   &   would   rather   have   a   scuffle   than   ever   ask   for   his   care .   ❛      we   are   holding   the   vienna   world   fair   soon ,   did   you   hear ?   there   is   a   lot   of   work   to   be   done .   ❜

he   thinks   of   erzsebet ,   who   drags   his   sorry   ass   out   of   bed   when   he   refuses   to   see   the   preparations   undertaken ,  who   smacks   him   gently   to   bring   him   out   of   smoke - induced   stupor ,   &   he   thinks   of   how   he   should   do   it   for   ludwig ,   at   least ,   if   not   for   his   own   self .    ❛     the   russians   will   bring   models   of   their   ships .   i   shall   send   a   letter   to   gilbert ,   next   week ,   so   you   may   come .   won ’ t   that   be   lovely ?   you   can   see   all   the   ships   for   yourself  . . .         ❜

HE   DID   NOT   BOTHER   TO   ANNOUNCE   HIS   PRESENCE   when   he   sat   by   johan .    they   had   known   each   other   for   so   long   that   they   know   each   other ’ s   footsteps ,   the   pattern   of   their   breaths .   you   could   take   johan ’ s   hearing   away ,   too ,    &   roderich   was   sure   that   he   would   recognise   him   either   way .  &   he   sits   like   this   for   a   while ,   breathing ,   not   breaking   the   silence   until   he   does . 

roderich   never   liked   ugly   things .   he   spent   his   time   concerned   with   architecture ,   art .   he   glorified   altomonte   &   he   loved   mozart ---   he   would   have   made   them   immortal ,   if   he   could ,   but   instead   he   left   their   art   with   him ,   made   them   into   marble ,   into   manicured   headstone .   but   war ---   this   war ,   was   hideous .   &   yet ,   it   was   raw   humanity .   a   cycle   of   death   &   pain   &   the   ecstasy   of   alive ;   alive   for   just   one   more   day .   when   he   looked   at   johan ,   at   his   ruined   eyes   &   face   that   would   mend   itself   in   due   time ,   he   saw   all   of   it . 

❛        how   dare   you   ask   me   that ?     ❜     he   said ,   looking   away .   ❛          i   do   not   answer   for   my   people .   i   do   what   is   right   for   them .   you ---   i   did   not   pull   the   trigger ,   i   never   decided   for   myself .   do   you   think   i   wanted   this ?   did   any   of   you   want   this ?    ❜      when   he   looks   at   johan ,   he   sees   ludwig .   bright - eyed ,   enthusiastic .   the   way   he   ran   from   his   piano   bench   to   stand   by   johan .   the   way   roderich   would   let   him   stand   on   his   feet   when   he   taught   him   how   to   dance .   when   they   all   took   off   their   coats   to   touch   steel ,   one   trying   to   outdo   their   other   in   front   of   their   charge .

words cause a prickle against skin. there before him is both man and memory of the existence of the once before. one simply just anders, the circle mage at kinloch hold. their local escape artist with the wonder for why had he never been made tranquil ( harmless, irving had often called him - merely a lost boy with anders blood ). one simply just the healer with the lantern lit; a darktown secret well kept. here now though, their paths meet once more, and the being that stands before the once-templar ( always templar ) is the leader of the staves with eyes of blue. 

crackle. tendrils of the fade within near snap at air with justice’s instinct to protect. his hands are steady, grip at staff as he stands strong.

          ❛  Should’ve guessed that Gray found another kid to fight once he and Lyon split.   ❜   A tickle of a laugh almost left tinted lips along with a faint smile. Typical behaviour of children was to roughhouse to display who was superior in terms of strength. She would supervise to be sure that severe injuries were avoided back in those days, now it seemed her supervision was no longer necessary. 

          ❛   Who is the victor in most of these, I wonder. Certainly it must be ice as enough of it can turn any inferno into an ember.  ❜   She teased, of course. Ur knew that he was talented. By studying the dragon slayer before her, as well as hearing the stories, he was a capable fighter just a little competitive and rather hot-headed.
