Shared experiences. Shiro is not somebody who easily falls in love - he barely knows himself so he would never want to be so vulnerable to another person. It would be easier for him to trust the other if his partner experienced the same things he had ( which honestly, is a very small number of people/aliens. ) He would be able to relate and open up better if he knows that the other person would get what he was trying to say.

“Give me one good reason not to shoot an arrow through your head.” Karliah asked as she pulled back the string of her bow. She aimed her laser arrow to the Druid’s head. “Now tell me, witch. Why are you here?” 

Karliah knew of the druids from what her parents told her as a child, they are not to be trusted. Her brows contorted into a scowl. She would kill this witch if she means to do harm. She didn’t get this far just to be stopped now.
