i spammed this on twitter and i’m just posting it here for posterity.
i don’t know if i’ll ever write this.
concept: A year has passed since the events of Force Awakens. Poe and Finn have just started a relationship after much pining/UST/etc.
They're very happy and excited for the next chapter in their lives (together). Then Poe is presumed dead after a routine mission gone wrong.
Maybe Poe was ambushed or sold out, idk. It's just supposed to be a routine intel-gathering mission, but something goes horribly wrong.
The Resistance loses all contact with Poe, then months later BB-8 is dropped off at the base by space pirates maybe, w/terrifying stories.
BB-8 was separated from Poe on their mission somehow and eventually picked up by pirates. The last it saw of Poe, he was being badly beaten.
Since it's been months and no one's heard anything from Poe nor seen any signs of his X-Wing, he's believed to be dead.
Poe is officially listed as MIA, but no one believes he's still alive. There's a funeral for him on Yavin 4. Finn meets Kes. There are tears
Rey tries to reach for Poe through the Force, but her powers are still developing and though she thinks she can feel a lifeline she isn't
sure if it means Poe is still alive or if it's just an echo. She decides not to tell Finn, lest he get his hopes up only to have them dashed
General Organa gives Finn a few weeks of 'shore leave,' which he spends on Yavin 4. Rey visits him as often as she can, while training with
Luke and working on getting a pilot's license (because she's good at it, not that she wishes Poe'd had a chance to teach her before he died)
After leave is up, Finn returns to the Resistance. He's left feeling unanchored. He doesn't know if he wants to stay and fight, or run.
General Organa gives him the option to stay or leave, and promises he'll always have the support of the Resistance
Finn realizes he can't leave, though. He can't leave Rey behind. He can't lose her too. So he stays, determined to do the best he can.
Cut to a year or two in the future. Finn and Rey started sleeping together to cope w/the loss of Poe and managed to build
something out of the wreckage. Finn is starting to see a light at the end of the tunnel: maybe he can Rey can actually be happy together.
Then Poe, badly beaten, weak, and malnourished, is discovered in a prison cell during a recon mission on a remote base in the Outer Rim.
Poe's brought back to the Resistance base, to much fanfare, and hailed as a returning war hero.
Poe steadfastly refuses to talk about his ordeal. In fact, he doesn't talk at all and they're getting worried.
Finn is personally informed by the general that Poe has been found alive, and rather than joy and relief, all Finn feels is sick.
He lost a year of his life he could have spent with Poe. And at the same time, he spent that year with Rey, learning to fall in love again.
General Organa understands this is a delicate situation, but wants Finn to try and talk to Poe, see if they can get information out of him
about the place where he was imprisoned.
Finn is angry, hurt, conflicted, sad, and, yes, joyful and relieved. But he knows, no matter what, someone will come out of this hurting.
Poe, meanwhile, has no idea of any of this. All he knows is he's alive and Finn's alive and things are finally as they should be.
Unfortunately, someone lets it slip where Poe can hear that Finn and Rey are in a relationship, before Finn has a chance to tell him himself
When Finn goes to talk to Poe about his experiences in captivity, Poe is unresponsive and Finn realizes, with growing dread, what's happened
For Finn, it feels like losing Poe all over again and Rey doesn't know how to help him this time.
She also realizes—with her own sense of growing dread—that Finn still deeply loves Poe and she could end up losing them both.
Master Luke is, of course, no help in matters of the heart. General Organa isn't much help either, as she's still grieving the loss of Han.
Rey tries to talk to Poe herself, but is turned away. She thinks if she could just get him to listen, the three of them could work it out.
Finn is caught between a rock and a hard place, obviously. Poe was his first love, and they hadn't really even gotten a chance before Poe
was torn from his side. But he also loves Rey with a bone-deep ferocity. He can't fathom not having either in his life.
Finn wonders, where do they all fit? He'd been immeasurably happy with Poe, but he found happiness with Rey too.
The happiness he had with Poe is a different shade than the happiness with Rey, but they're both vital. He doesn't want to have to choose.
Meanwhile, Poe really just wants things to go back to the way they were before he was captured
and, despite the guilt she feels, Rey just wants things to go back to the way they were before Poe came back. When she and Finn were happy.
I'm not sure if they'd go poly-v here or Poe would step aside so Finn and Rey could be together.
I think Poe would try to step aside, but Finn and Rey wouldn't let him.
Poe would be confused, still thinking Rey hates him or doesn't want him with Finn. Rey would explain to him that she loves Finn
and while she cares for Poe, she doesn't love him like that. But she can share Finn with someone she knows loves him as much as she does.
Poe would be like "are you sure this is okay with you, buddy?" because they're talking about sharing another human being, and Finn would
laugh at him and say, "Buddy, this was my idea." Poe would flush with happiness, finally, after a year of being without, and he'd kiss Finn
gently, still a little unsure around Rey. Rey would roll her eyes at him and, in a show of good faith, give Poe a friendly peck on the cheek
Finn would haul them against his chest and kiss them both. And Poe would take them to Yavin 4 to sit in the shade of his mother's tree.
