Can you describe your job for us?
I have several jobs—I work as a lawyer, law professor and TV host.
When I’m doing my work as a Lawyer, I have to do a lot of paperwork, I attend meetings with clients, sometimes I have to appear in court. If I work with clients from abroad, I usually have to work late at night to adjust for the time zone difference.
As a law professor, I teach in several law schools. Wednesday nights are extra tiring because I teach Property Law for 4 hours straight until 9:30PM. Teaching the Masters of Law program at San Beda Graduate Law School is particularly interesting because I teach lawyers who are much older than me—including judges and local government officials. Sometimes I have to travel and devote my whole weekend to teaching at Law Schools in different provinces. Teaching has always been one of my advocacies so I don’t mind that it requires a lot of time & work for little pay.
I host a TV program called LegalHD in Solar News Channel where my co-host and I discuss legal issues usually with a guest from the applicable government agency. We also provide free legal advice to viewers who ask questions through live phone calls, or through social media. I enjoy answering questions from people of various backgrounds around the Philippines. Sometimes we even get questions from Filipinos living abroad, including OFWs. When I have free time during the day or before going to bed, I take time to answer legal questions sent via Twitter or our FB page.
From a scale of 1 ton 10, how would you rate how much fun you're having?
9—I can’t give it a 10 because it’s not fun on days when I run around with barely any sleep.
What is the best thing about it?
The ability to make things better—whether it’s by making a business transaction legally compliant for a client, teaching my students a subject to equip them for the bar exam, teaching older lawyers an international law to expand their areas of interest, or answering questions that can help viewers who can’t afford lawyers. The things we do don't always have to be on a grand scale in order to have a positive impact.
Describe your daily dresscode at work?
Smart casual and versatile. Versatility is very important for me especially on days when I have to go straight from the office or a work meeting, to a media or social event. My ideal dress is one that can pass as a business attire and a cocktail dress.
Workwear advisory: What should a Lawyer NOT wear to work and why?
Sloppy clothes or slutty clothes. An outfit can be sexy without having to be inappropriate. Lawyers are considered officers of the court, so I think it’s important for lawyers to wear clothes that fit that role.
