Repost: @iqchahal The tradition of Dabbewalas (delivery of home cooked food, cooked by an individual family to work place ) which started in 1890 in Mumbai, is unique of its kind in the entire world. Today, nearly 5000 Dabbewalas deliver home cooked food to nearly 2 lakh office goers in Mumbai. Not only this is recorded in Guinness Book of World Records, but it has become a case study in the Harvard University as to how Dabbewalas on foot, bicycles, local trains and hand pulled carts satisfy the hunger of nearly 2 lakh Mumbaikars by collecting cooked food tiffins from each household and delivering them at office premises with 99.1% punctuality over a period of last 132 years in Mumbai at an extremely economical rate. Its like a relay race.As a mark of respect to Dabbewalas in Mumbai, TODAY,BMC has gifted the Dabbewalas Association,a DABBEWALA BHAVAN near Pali Hill in high end Bandra West,Mumbai. The premises worth nearly Rs. 25 crores has been given to Dabbewalas Association at token rate as a gratitude to Dabbewalas of Mumbai by BMC. It is a matter of great pride that 2 Dabbewalas, Sopan Mare & Rahhunath Medge attended the wedding ceremony of Prince Charles at Buckingham Palace in London on 9th April 2005 on a special invitation. I take this opportunity to salute Dabbewalas of Mumbai.
