‘ stay together, do you understand ?? ’ the resolve in her father’s eyes had steeled her once. he had never been a terribly brave man. but she took him seriously above all else. her resolve had matched his as she had looked from him, her brother, and down. she had nodded, swallowed heavily -- then lied. was it even possible ?? the chaos of it all would’ve surely killed them all. maybe that was a selfish thought -- she should’ve stayed with them, perhaps died with them if that’s what it took. in her fear and her terror she had fled, her size being blessing, a necessary blanket. the monsters never looked DOWN after all.
all her speed had got her was solitude. sneakers become worn day after day as she walks along the road. another TENANT from her father. stick to the roads, try to find help -- people. but she had seen none but the various monsters that made her breathing come in hitched exchanges and her blood to run cold. she didn’t even know where she was now; the last sign she had seen had some cities she’d never heard of before -- not that it mattered anymore. she doubted anywhere her feet would take her would hold either father or brother, truly alone -- the last of her family.
cars lined her path as she advanced down the road. corpses, real corpses lay inside, the decaying smell wasn’t something she was at all used to -- not yet, at least. she avoids the open windows, regardless. it’s silent, and she matches, moving almost like a shade through the maze of vehicles. a gas station before her, surrounded by an array of tents, tarps, and the like. this had once been a makeshift camp of sorts. nearing the store proper, she grabs a handful of gravel. hand reeled back to throw, she stops, when she sees movement over the cars -- some dead man in a hat moves with purpose, she thinks. almost dropping her deterrent, she runs behind one of the gas pumps, heartbeat drowning out the approaching footsteps.
