Offroute's weekly Artist Inspiration is Faith Ringgold! Faith is a painter, mixed media sculptor, writer, performance artist, teacher, and lecturer. Born in 1930, Harlem, New York, Ringgold went on to earn her B.S. and M.A. degrees in visual art from the City College of New York from 1955 to 1959. In the early 1960's, Ringgold traveled Europe- her travels and return home inspired her first political paintings titled The American People Series from 1963 to 1967.  In the early 1970's, Faith began creating tankas (a Tibetan art form of paintings framed in richly brocaded fabrics), sculptures, and masks. Originally, Ringgold's art was inspired by African art forms- it wasn't until she traveled to Nigeria and Ghana in the late 70's that her creations with masks really began to unfold and become her greatest inspiration. In 1980, Ringgold partnered with her mother to create her first quilt titled Echoes of Harlem. Her first story quilt Who's Afraid of Aunt Jemima? was published in 1983.  Her first book Tar Beach was published in 1991. It won over 20 awards, including the Coretta Scott King award for best-illustrated children's book of 1991 and the Caldecott Honor. In 2010, an animated version voiced by Natalie Cole was produced and premiered on HBO. The book was based on the story quilt of the same name that was showcased in The Woman on a Bridge series, 1988. The original story quilt, Tar Beach, is in the permanent collection of the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York City. Faith Ringgold continues to create today- her most recent art inspired books are the Harlem Renaissance Party (Harper Collins 2015) and We Came to America (Alfred A. Offroute's weekly Artist Inspiration is Sonia Delaunay! Delaunay was a Ukrainian-born French artist and designer known for creating colorful geometric patterns in her work. Born Sarah Élievna Stern on November 14, 1885 in Odessa, Ukraine to a poor Jewish family, she was sent to live with her wealthy uncle Henri Terk at the age of five. She adopted the name Sonia Terk. She went on to study drawing in Germany at the Karlsruhe Academy of Fine Arts, before moving to Paris in 1906. It was in Paris that she met and later married the art dealer Wilhelm Uhde, who served as a means to Delaunay becoming a French citizen.  It was Uhde that introduced her to her future husband Robert Delaunay. Having left Uhde for Delaunay, the new couple created a fusion of Cubism and Neo-Impressionism, later deemed Orphism by the poet Guillaume Apollinaire. She used this new aesthetic approach to make paintings, textiles, and designs over the course of her career.  “For me there is no gap between my painting and my so-called ‘decorative’ work,” she said. “I never considered the ‘minor arts’ to be artistically frustrating; on the contrary, it was an extension of my art.”   In 1964, Delaunay became the first living female artist to have a retrospective at the Louvre Museum. She died on December 5, 1979 in Paris, France at the age of 94. Offroute's weekly Art Inspiration is Lynda Benglis! Benglis is an American artist known best for her use of wax, latex, metal, and foam in poured sculptural forms. Born on October 25, 1941 in Lake Charles, LA, she received her BFA from Newcomb College in New Orleans in 1964 before moving to New York where she met artists like Sol Lewitt, Eva Hesse, Donald Judd, and Barnett Newman. Benglis has used her work to engage with the physicality and process of her material-based art, while confronting femininity in a male-dominated art world.  "My work is an expression of space. What is the experience of moving? Is it pictorial? Is it an object? Is it a feeling?” she said. “It all comes from my body.”  In addition to her sculptural work, she has produced both video and photographs. Today, Benglis’ works can be found in the collections of the Art Institute of Chicago, The Museum of Modern Art in New York, and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, among others.
