❛ But let me offer some advice: next time you threaten someone, make sure you have proof. ❜
* ( REIGN / SENTENCE PROMPTS. / Royals AU where the opals are the prince / princess of their respective country / kingdom n if this had been based on actual history... isobel’s the princess of the ottoman empire LKFJSDLKF im NOT rly sure about the west kingdoms i just know france and portugal were their own monarchies rip but im assuming ginevra’s fam has a kingdom specifically for the purposes of writing this. whatever this is.
the moon bears bright on the steel of her kilij , crossed with ginevra’s own sword . ah , but of course she expects hostility —— young nobles of the realm are all about bite ( and perhaps out of all of them , it’s isobel’s jaw that has the most teeth ) . despite the horrid reception , a smile finds its way on isobel’s features . she leans forward , sliding the curve of her sword along the rigid length of the other’s , and then hops off the windowsill . outside , her spies are already on the move , light as air . two hang just out of sight along the open window behind her , ready to pounce at a moment’s notice . others maneuver themselves through the shadows . the grunts outside ginevra’s study tell her there won’t be any interruptions . temporarily , anyway .
“ i’m sparing you a kindness , ginevra . ” isobel speaks as if she hasn’t just snuck through the borders of five kingdoms in the last week , as if they’re having tea with the rest of the other royals on a lazy afternoon by the cliffs . tone as smooth as the seagrass fluttering against a steady current , yet her words are as deliberate as a pit viper strike . “ my father is planning on taking your southern borders , and why would i risk coming all the way here , under the cover of night , to make jest ? ”
a pause hangs between them . then , the force pushing against her sword stops . but ginevra doesn’t put down her weapon . there’s confusion , now , too —— isobel would dare betray her own ?
isobel lowers her kilij . she hadn’t gone through the trouble of warning ginevra only to end up in a spar of her own . ginevra will tell the others , she’s sure ; the alliances between the westward kingdoms are much stronger , and they’ll listen to her , the light of the west . they can’t afford a meeting , not at the cost of their kingdoms ( and for isobel , her father’s empire ) . not at the cost of all of their lives ; these are tumultuous times . though they have been bound by spilt blood and a spoken oath , they would have to find another way to stop their father’s wars from becoming their own .
a bird call pierces the air . time to go . “ i’ll see you at the midsummer’s ball , ” she says , though the sentiment is hollow . it’s a long while before any of them will hold such luxuries , and longer still to welcome isobel among them . “ and hopefully our kingdoms are still our kingdoms . it gets quite lonely when you’re the only royal at the table . ”
