When the notification had first come in, Emily had done her best to stay calm and remain at least somewhat logical. Though admittedly, calm wasn’t something that came as easily to her these days as it normally did, and the sleep deprivation probably wasn’t helping with that.

She pulled out her phone, calling Juliet’s number and waiting, her foot tapping anxiously and her index finger scratching absently at her thumb nail. Upon receiving no answer, she tried again, and after a third time she abruptly jumped out of her chair, walking straight out the door without a word.

A few minutes later she was home, her heart pounding as she carefully pushed the door open and made her way quietly through the house, her weapon drawn.

A quiet groan escaped Emily’s lips as she awoke, her entire body aching. As she opened her eyes, it took a moment to register that she was in a small hospital room, and a small frown crossed her features at the realisation that the details of how she had gotten there were somewhat fuzzy. She tried not to worry about that, however, and lifted a hand to rub at her eyes, her brow furrowing as she spotted her daughter a moment later. “Shouldn’t you be at school...?” she mumbled groggily.
