@ofmanycrowns sent ❝ Oi, Kambe, ❞ Haru greeted as he approached his partner with a sizeable box in hand, placing the box into the other man’s hands as he locks eye contact with him. ❝ It isn’t much but..I heard it was your birthday today.., ❞ Haru says, crossing his arms and looking away as he taps his finger and waits for his partner to open the gift. Inside is a cake, personally baked by the one and only, inspector himself. ❝ I tried to make it with the ingredients I could afford, ❞ Haru explains, huffing a bit as he continues. ❝ With your picky tastes in mind...don’t spit it out, ❞ Haru muttered a warning, though he laughs a bit in the end. ❝ If it’s not to the ‘Kambe standards’ you can always share it with Suzue of your house maids so it doesn’t go to waste - ❞
Attention pulled away from what he was originally doing, Kato has his full and undivided attention. He’s handed a box, head tilting slowly as he quirks a brow and looks from Kato to the box. Something for his birthday... He wasn’t exactly used to receiving gifts. Usually Suzue got him something, but it was never really a tradition he had gotten used to. He sets the box on his desk after a small peak inside; offering a quick bow of his head and a muttered ‘just a moment’ before he steps away.
Kambe’s only gone briefly before he returns with a fork and a small plastic plate. Whether he spits it out or not will be up to him. Though there had never really been time for someone to make him a cake. It was usually bought from someone else, as they had other business. He cuts a piece and studies it for a moment. It wasn’t gourmet made by any means, but... it was... made for him.
Even if it doesn’t show in his expression, the warmth shows in his eyes. This inspector actually made him something. Something that hadn’t been bought with the most money could afford. It was simple. But it was full of thought.
This inspector that was his friend. One of his only friends.
He takes a bite and while it’s not something he’s expecting, he doesn’t hate it. He’s almost tempted to pretend to spit it out, just to see Kato’s reaction, but... not this time. Not when it’s something like this. There’s a ghost of a smile, even if it’s hard to see as he finishes the piece of cake off without a word before standing and looking at Kato, that ghost of a smile growing just a bit, even if it’s brief.
“It won’t go to waste.” He takes a step closer, hesitating only briefly before resting his hand on Kato’s shoulder. “Thank you.”
