“what do you M E A N?” and with every word the other says, kai can hear his heart break a little bit more. “if-- if we get divorced-- we’re gonna have to figure out custody and-- one of us is going to have to move out...” he inhales deeply as he loses eye contact with the other, hands running through his messy locks. “i’ll quit the band.”

"Good morning, love,” Kartik mumbled as he felt their hands against his face. They’d fallen asleep in some cheap motel somewhere in Nebraska, a place where they were absolutely nothing and no one. He was still glad they had managed to get here from Massachusetts. They’d seen so much of this country that he’d never seen before, and Nebraska and Kansas were probably he’s least favorite spots. “Are the children of the corn coming after us or something? I’m actually kind of scared of them,” he joked, remembering how there were corn fields right behind the motel.

Avery was never sure why the hell he thought it would be a good idea to come back to this town, the town that had forced him to leave everything he knew to go far away. He should’ve known that the moment anything happened, they would all blame him. He was the go-to scapegoat because of who he was and where he came from. He’d grown up on the wrong side of the tracks and lived his entire life being a disappointment. His family didn’t help either, especially growing up in a poorer neighborhood with his mother who couldn’t always afford food. It was easy to go after people like him who became part of a certain group of people in the town. Now here he was looking over at them standing in the kitchen trying to convince him to let them help and let them in his life. “I really think you need to go,” Avery said, finally looking up at them. “You don’t need to be anywhere near me. I’m already packing my bag and ready to get the fuck out of here. It’s time for you to just go back to your life with your picture clean family.”

Veronica held onto their hand as she dragged them onto the dance floor of the club. It was extremely crowded and she loved it that way. It made it far easier for them to sneak off with an unsuspecting victim and no one would take any notice or care about any of it. Everyone was so drunk and moving to the music that they didn’t notice the two of them watching every movement of the people in the crowd as they were probably the only sober people there. “Come on, love,” Veronica said, turning around to them as she spoke. “I bet we can find something fun to do tonight. Something exciting and beautiful.”
