no but really??? when allison's powers first surface, not long after that halloween, she's honestly terrified. she's only seen actual magic used in this horrifying context: it's kept her awake at night, haunting her dreams. she sees streaks of grey in max's hair, notices how easily he gets worn out in those weeks after, hears about dani becoming alienated from her classmates, and magic did that.

it takes her a while to embrace it, to look more deeply into her family history and actually own this gift. realize that it depends on the wielder.

     “ if it  walks  like a pumpkin and  talks  like a pumpkin ... ”  her tone is sickly sweet, with an almost painful  edge  to it. this is no show of  hospitality,  but a proclamation of  VICTORY ;  after all the trouble these abominable brats have put her through, winifred thinks she  deserves  to  GLOAT  a little. she adds a sprinkle of powdered bone to her potion, then bops the child on the nose with a still-dusty thumb.
