     “ it's awful, isn't it? how quickly people forget the things that made them fall in love to begin with. ”

the idea of love, as heavy and all-encompassing and warm it is, simply disappearing without warning is not a comforting one. theo has been in love before. they've cared deeply and almost to a point where it became too much for them, heart hammering and chest fit to burst. it had terrified them. but beyond terrifying them, it had made life seem brighter - like it was worth waking up in the morning, like they could shoulder anything so long as they could return to love's comforting weight drawn around them like a blanket.

     falling in love had been easy. falling out of love had been painful, sickening, each day worse than the last. still, they grieve; theo isn't sure their heart has fully shaken off the after effects.

     “ i find myself hoping it's more a case of everyone having qualities worth loving rather than people becoming bored, ” they sigh, somewhere between wistful and dreary. “ the alternative is that their love hinges on being entertained. that possibility is much worse. ”

Edna didn’t have a clue where she’d wound up, but it wasn’t the Rayfalke Spiritcrest. There were humans everywhere, too. Most of them didn’t seem to see her, which was typical enough for her. One in particular, a young human girl, seemed to be different. She seemed to be looking right at her.

“What.” Edna’s expression remained stagnant. “You never seen a girl like me before or something?” If Reiko really could see her, Edna would get an answer. If not, then she’d feel like an idiot for even trying to talk to her.

     wolf’s lips split wide, showing all his white teeth, a grin made up of daggers ground sharp on a whetstone. not afraid, she insists, and he is fascinated. rare is the day someone faces all 9 feet, 5 inches of him, furred and clawed and just this side of monstrous, and tells him they don’t feel an ounce of fear from him. he detects no lie, either; her pulse is steady, her chest deflating confident around the spoken statement. how fun, beast thinks, and theo warns him that he is, perhaps, coming on a little strong. it’s a delicate balance between encouraging someone to remain fearless and pushing them right over the edge into sudden caution and awareness.

     his legs bend until he can look her in the eye, knuckles nearly brushing the ground, and an amused hum churns in his chest, almost a laugh. if he was human, it would say are you sure? - not a threat, but a chance to reconsider.

School was over for the day, and Rinwell still hadn’t gone home yet. The main reason for that was because she’d gotten herself lost in a book she’d picked up from the library. Her typical sorts of books she was drawn to were more relevant to owls, but this one fantasy novel had gotten her attention. She was sat outside, book in hand, and seemingly lost to the world around her as she read on. The story had taken an interesting turn, with one of the main characters revealing that she’d been a mage all along.

That’s so cool, Rinwell thought. I wish that could be me... Anything would have been better than being ostracized for being the weird bookish girl everyone in her grade knew her to be. She knew that she probably should head home to Hootle soon, but reading just felt right. Her foster parents probably were wondering where she was just as much as Hootle might have been, but again. Rinwell wanted to keep reading.

Only when she heard someone sit nearby did she look up. Reiko was a girl that she didn’t know too well, but had seen around. Most people seemed to avoid her, too. She wondered why.

“Um...”

“Hey,” Rinwell greeted. “Did you want to sit here? There’s plenty of room.”

     “ it’s an interesting depiction, isn’t it? ”

     perhaps it could be considered rude to interrupt a stranger in the middle of perusing an exhibit, but she had a certain aura around her that stuck out to theo, like raking his fingers through grass and finding a single wildflower stem. she’d paused in front of a woodblock depiction of a traditional monster they’re unfamiliar with, and they study the painting as much as they do her. it’s halfway between a cat and a human, traditional garb about its shoulders, and a stringed instrument balanced expertly in its paws. the painting exudes mischief, a sly grin curled beneath black whiskers.

     they crook a smile, aiming for friendly, unassuming, a passerby commenting idly on a shared subject.

     “ i never thought of spirits as being playful. ”
