broke: copley's descendants end up pigeonholed into the same job for the old guard generation after generation (as some kind of weird penance? idk it's gross if you think about it)
woke: copley's descendants grow up in the mythos of the old guard and usually every two or three generations when one is ready to retire, another one is genuinely excited to do spy shit in varying capacities (ranging from tech to intel to logistics to researcher depending on the person) but it's NEVER obligatory or expected
bespoke: the old guard accidentally calls the new guy copley after he (and later his granddaughter, who did want the position) died and it becomes a Thing. eventually they call the auxiliary position itself "Copley". we need to get a new copley, they say, when they've been without a liaison for fifteen years, three centuries and eight "copleys" later. (far in the future, with an etymology that no one can quite trace, the word "copley" becomes a ubiquitous word that means something between "one who aids because they can" and "renaissance (wo)man/jack of all trades")
“Is this you, Nicky?” Nile asks teasingly, at basically every man in every Renaissance painting, after finding out they lived in Italy for a while during its height.
“No,” says Nicky every time, without looking.
“Yes,” says Joe every time, also without looking.
Nile doesn’t really believe Joe, honestly. It’s just a joke. And then she’s looking at one of her old art history books and has to pause for a second because—
It’s all white marble and the hair’s wrong, which makes it a little harder, but—
She drops the book in front of Joe and Nicky, and casually, says, “They’ve never actually identified the David‘s model. You wouldn’t happen to know anything about that, would you?” It’s meant as another joke, really, but Nicky turns red and Joe bursts out laughing.
“Miché was very talented, but he never did get his noses quite right.”
We talk a lot about how Booker is affectionately bullied as the youngest/newest of the group, but just imagine how when Nile comes along, he has these few shining moments where he thinks that’ll be her position now; he’s done his time; it’ll be a new era for him!
But then Nile immediately becomes the precious bébé of the group and Booker is shunted into the role of Middle Child™ who is still affectionately bullied, while Nile gets away with murder, and he’s just—
I don't know what's funnier: Andy knowing All The Languages and Nile constantly being like ?!?!? how ?!?!? or Andy knowing a bunch of languages except, like, a really obvious one that seems like it would be a given and Nile's like ...how do you not know German even I know some German from when I was stationed there?? And Andy's just like "never got around to it but I still remember a little Althochdeutsch from 772CE" which ends up being decidedly unhelpful in the situation
none of that broke “quỳnh is evil/booker is in danger” stuff. i want more “quỳnh and booker are disasters who are absolutely not qualified to be off on their own but accidentally Make It Work” content. like at first they feed off each other’s disasterness (the flat, for example, has eight types of alcohol and no food) and every time quỳnh asks a question about modern society booker’s like “fuck if i know” because he’s booker but then eventually he hears quỳnh’s nightmares and is like, “wow maybe you should go to therapy for that?” and somewhere along the way quỳnh drags booker along too because “my therapist says that all emotions serve a purpose and you need to learn how to identify and face yours” and a year later they rock up to the charlie safehouse well on their way to emotional stability, to the pleased bewilderment of the rest of the old guard
nile’s about to learn that being an immortal is great and all—they’re always there for each other, etc., etc.—but that doing something embarrassing means being reminded of it for the next thousand or so years. remember that time the waiter said ‘enjoy your meal’ and you said ‘you too’? asks booker, in 2278. of course nile remembers, they won’t fucking let her live it down, even 257 years later.
Nile [on Duolingo in frustration]: ugh, they keep having me translate "I eat bread"! I get it, io mangio il pane.
Nicky [shouting from the next room]: bread is IMPORTANT !!!
