I think it'd be super cool if aliens have already communicated with earthlings but instead of talking to humans they're like "nah these other ones feel more up our alley" and they connect with like orcas or crabs and like learnt their language and have a whole knowledge exchange with them and humans just don't know it cause we live so far up our own asses that we think we're the protagonists of the planet.
