Day 4: A Favourite EU Companion

Okay.  As much as I absolutely adore Erimem, Hex, and Frobisher, there’s really ever only one answer to this question.  It also doubles for my favorite companion in the whole of the series.  There is only one who can top this list and it’s by a landslide.  

Evelyn Smythe.  

Can we just take a moment to appreciate Evelyn, in a world where the companions are very usually young and pretty, where the current show runner was afraid Karen Gillan would be too ‘homely’ (if I’m remembering the quote right) rather than pretty enough, and where even the Doctor must be eye candy in order to escape hoards of angry fans who thing\k Twelve is too much of an angry grandpa, here we have Dr. Evelyn Smythe.  She’s well in her fifties, a professor of History, baker extraordinaire, and a mostly decent knitter (if you ignore the fact that one sleeve is longer than the other).  She is an older woman who’s husband left her because she chose a academia conference over their relationship.  She bakes the best chocolate cake and even sings (though grudgingly) when it’s called for.  She cares about her students and is very motherly towards them even when she’s had no children of her own.  

She’s also an extreme badass who takes none of Six’s BS.  None.  Absolutely Zip.  (Yes, I’m well aware I have A Type. XD )  Now, she’s not bad ass in the traditional butt kicking way, but just look at that list up there of how I’ve described her and tell me that is not one of the highest levels of badassery to have ever graced the TARDIS?  

She genuinely cares about a lot of things.  She takes Cassie and Hex in like one of her students.  And really, let’s just not talk about the sheer amount of sobbing that went on during Arrangements for War and how she and Six talk at the end of it.  She just has so much strength in that audio, pulling Six back even when she’d accused him of not doing enough before.  And I adore all the Project stories lines.  I wasn’t too keen on A Death in the Family, to be honest, but I adore Thicker Than Water and Six and Evelyn’s dance at the end.

I love how fond of her Six is too.  While Six was often caustic with Peri, he absolutely adored Evelyn despite himself, and it broke his hearts when she never forgave him for spoilery things.  

And there are just so many of her audios that are brilliant and make my favorites list. I mean, Doctor Who and the Pirates is pure gold for comedy and drama.    I just love her so much.  My life goals when I’m her age is to be a cross between her and Miss Marple.  She’s just that awesome.

Guys.  GUYS.  DOCTOR WHO AND THE PIRATES.  Seriously it is one of the greatest things of all time, and it's only one dollar.  If you don't believe me on how awesome it is, just watch this.  It is glorious and meta and sad and they sing.  

The full announcement is here.  I'm also considering getting Flip Flop, but that one was such a mind fuck.  Everyone should definitely consider their one dollar for awesome pirate-y things though.  It's one of the best.
